The increase in attacks is the crazy part... I honeymooned in maui this summer and visited makena beach...as I was swimming in 10 plus feet of water I heard locals swimming near me say that the sharks are always there usually within ten feet of the swimmers. I opened up my eyes underwater and could not see ten feet, so I got the hell out. Days after we left a big storm churned up the water and reduced vis to nothing that's when the German swimmer got nailed... About 100 yards from where I had been swimming. News I read at the time said the poor clarity leads sharks to mistake the hands and feet of swimmers for baitfish...
Murky water= no dangle in salt

for those guys who remember me, thanks for asking if it was me ;) pretty sad situation to say the least.  We trolled by on my snorkel boat i work on 15 minutes before it happened.  He was pulled in and lost alot of his leg and by the time they were able to strap his leg he had lost alot of blood.  he was trying to sabiki bait and was chumming according to a friend who was out there drift diving for ono's.  Im very familiar with the waters there and they are relatively safe if you like to play safe.  One thing i do know from spearfishing out here is that there are alot of sharks where there are alot of fish.  Hope you guys are slaying fish over there!  Aloha from Maui!

Thanks for checking in John. Figured it wasn't you. Really sad to lose a brother. Yeah we are slaying some fish over here. A lot has changed over the years. Hope all is well. I'll PM you next time I go to Maui.

I recently read about this Australian company that developed shark replant wet suits
http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/nature/post/australian-company-creates-worlds-first-shark-repelling-wetsuits-but-will-they-really-work/

Check out the third picture with the black and white stripes on the wetsuit and underside of a surf board.

It crossed my mind to add black stripes on the hull of my kayak...

Not sure that's such a good idea...

About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.

never see nation wide breaking news about this
This reminds me of a quote from Stalin, "1 death is a tragedy, 1 million deaths is a statistic"
RIP fellow kayak angler.

Stripes are not a good idea. Adam had black stripes on the bottom of his kayak when he was attacked by a large white shark. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=25902.30

If you want to reduce your chances of being attacked here is what I would suggest:
#1 Don't fish Pigeon Point or Bean Hollow, ever
#2 Limit fishing at Capitola or Leffingwell
#3 Always fish with a buddy and stay close together
#4 Don't fish near seal haul outs

I own a shark shield but don't use it very often. I did use it at Duxbury and Bodega Head this year in the sharky areas. I am not sure they actually work but figure it's better than nothing.

good to hear from you!

Do we have an eye witness accounting from his paddle buddy?  recover the boat?

super tragic

I swim long distances in Hawaii every time I go.  it never feels like a good idea, and I always get spooked out . . .
