Is this the first known fatal shark attack on a kayak fisherman?

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Phil

In the U.S., I believe this is the first. There have been 2 fatal attacks on kayakers (La Jolla, Malibu) previously reported in the U.S., but they weren't fishing. Not sure about Australia. The water is too cold to sit side saddle in NCAL, but in SCAL and Hawaii I have seen kayak anglers sit side saddle on the ocean. I have sat side saddle landing salmon but won't be doing that in the future. :smt011

I have fished there with jtf a couple years ago.  I doubt he has a hobie now.  he likes his streamlined tarpon.

I've watched more than a few peeps side saddle or spread eagle (dangling over both sides) and wondered what the chances were of an attack.  RIP man.

About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.

never see nation wide breaking news about this

That's about 1 in a million.  There aren't a million people out there kayakfishing the ocean every day - more like thousand I'd bet...

The only time I dangle my legs over the sides of the X-Factor is when I'm trying to break off a snag in rough water.  No dangling, no side-saddle, no stringer of fish in the water.

Theorizing here-

There has been a significant recovery of sea turtle populations in the area of the shark attack.  The silhouette of a kayaker dangling his legs sidesaddle or spread could be mistaken for a turtle.  Tiger sharks eat sea turtles.  The least protected and most vulnerable part of a turtle is its flippers, so that is what the shark attacks.  Violently.

Dangling is therefore less dangerous in waters where sharks are not accustomed to dining on turtles.

Do we have any instances of fishermen here getting harassed about the feet while dangling?  I'm a dangler and i'd really hate to give it up without more to go on.  Although there is no way I'm dangling in turtle waters after seeing this and thinking about it.

Video showed a Hobie; Pedal on...

One of the interviews said there were 2 kayaks and the Hobie was rendering assistance. Makes sense because the victim was not a local and most kayak rental places in HI don't rent Hobies.
