I have read that a spinning reel should be spooled to about 1/8 inch from full.  How full should a conventional reel be spooled?

i put a lot on my first conventional...like all 300 yards of 80 lb braided(i think it was the whole new power spool...maybe less)there are some great videos on youtube about spooling a baitcaster...good question...I put the whole 300yard on because this is the reel I will target hali and wsb if I ever learn how and they can run and run and run on you I'm told...that said most of the time I'm in 40-120 f.o.w and it uses very little of the spool

I also fill a baitcaster about 1/8" from full also except line counters which I fill all the way. I thumb the spool when casting but others don't in which case you can fill them all the way.  Spectra has a lot of advantages but I use a lot of copolymer and fluoro as top shots. Depends on what I am fishing for.

I fill mine up just about all the way, leaving just a millimeter or so. This allows me some wiggle room since I cut about 5 feet off the end after each fishing trip. Also lose a little line to snags occasionally.

There is nothing more annoying than throwing away a pile of fresh line just because there isn't enough left on the spool...

I fill mine up so the line is level with the outside edge of the spool

I have a new conventional reel and last night and I swapped the string from my Penn 500 onto the new reel to fish the last few days and not have to buy a new roll right away...300yd green power pro 80lb was 2 months old on the jigmaster...turns out by reeling it from the old reel to new...I now have all the fresh 'new' line on top on the new reel...I should do this trick with an old donor reel to transfer and endo to fresh line all my reels next year mid season
