Had a bad pincer injury to my thumb yesterday and by this morning had an infection with an abscess which I drained. Guess those crab pincers are pretty dirty as far as bacteria. I cleaned it on the water with hand disinfectant but it still got infected. Anybody use gloves that they would recommend?

I'd think that maybe those black "rubber" gloves that cooks use.  They won't protect from a pinch but might protect from breaking the skin & are pretty tough (w/o loosing dexterity).  I think I saw Arial with some at the memorial while he was meticulously breaking down that pig.

I wore a 2mil neoprene dive glove on my left hand to grab the crabs & help with the line abrasion, and used my right hand for anything that required real dexterity.

I got tagged good by a short that hung on to my left ring finger yesterday It would have certainly punctured the skin without the glove. As it was, all I got was a little tender point on the tip of the finger today. Dive glove wins.

some guys I met on Saturday recommended the blue Atlas gloves that many deckhands wear. I tried them while pulling mussels and they were great for that, but I think they could still be punctured by the dungie claws so I'm not sure on that yet.

Scott - I've using Shakespeare Fillet gloves it has tight weave and very flexible.  I use it for pulling traps and handling crabs.  Stay away from Rapala fillet gloves, material is light and I don't like feel.
Got limits in the last 2 weekends too!

I use the blue Atlas gloves.  I've used them forever.  They have a good feel to them for handling crabs, pulling the pots, and paddling.  My thought is that this looser glove (as opposed to neoprene) will help from allowing the crab to get a good purchase on you.  If you start to feel pinched and pull away, the crab is left with a claw full of glove.  If a crab does get good purchase on you, I don't think this glove will do much for the bruising, although they may help prevent broken skin.

Bummer on the crab attack.  I use thick wool gloves and the whole palm side is layered in rubber, including the fingers - like the Atlas gloves but warmer.  I bought them at Coyote Bait and Tackle and are around $6.  I've had crabs ALMOST pinch my hand/fingers but the gloves are thick enough that you can just fling the crabs off before they get a real grip.  The smaller dungees are more fierce IMO.  Also, I started using ChuckE's method with success and a lot less b.s. - basically putting your hand to it's face, with the claws trapped and pressed against it's body.

What are you guys doing that you get pinched so often?  I've never been pinched on my  hands.  Been pinched on my FJ a couple times, no big deal there.

I can think of one place I would never want to be pinched, FJs or not.  :smt044
I use the nylon gloves with the rubber palms. Don't know how well they will work against a pinch.
I pull my hand back at lightening speed at the slightest touch from a crab. (Wussie with 10 functioning fingers)

I bought some blue Atlas gloves on Amazon but they only sold them by the dozen.  :smt013 The good news is that I will always have some extras in my Plano box and if you see me and want a pair, paddle over and I will give you a pair for free.  :smt003 Here is a picture of my thumb. Will probably lose my nail but the infection is under control.

Hah!  I buy them by the dozen too and usually carry extras.  I would have given YOU a pair!

Wow, that thumb looks gnarly.  He got you good.

Scott,

Some of my spinney lobster diving buddies use these gloves because they last longer than the kevlar neoprene ones and are less expensive. They also prevent being punctured by uni spines when reaching in holes for lobsters.

I started using them while cleaning uni and they work great. I'm probably going to use them for crabbing now too since I don't want to get pinched like that.........ouch!

About 11 bucks at Orchards.
