I'm not used to fishing heavier leds with swimbaits but rigging 2-4oz led with 5 inch baits just ends up ripping them. Even a couple 7 inch I'm tried. I like 5's. Anyone else had this problem? If so what heads you use instead?

I use the 4 oz heads that Andy1976 makes with 6.5 swimbait . I don't have problems splitting the bait.

If you are using swim baits that have been on a shelf for a long time you might have some product that is too old and broke down. I never have a problem with them splitting. Make sure that you don't put them on the jig head dry. A little spit or water on the hook and the prongs on the jig head will help. Where did you buy your baits at? How old are they?

You can trim of some of the lead on the shank of the hook or pre poke a hole with a pencil or screw driver and then crazy glue them on the lead head. Thats what I learned on the Big hammer skiff/kayak trips that I've been on. My .02 cents worth.

Two things that work for me are heatng the hook shank with a lighter or torch, or a slip a soldering iron tip into the swimbait before you slide the hook in. Both seal up nice and the partially melted swimbait plastic acts like glue on the shank, wear gloves to avoid hot plastic on the hands!

Fishermans Warehouse in San Jose sells a hole punch for swimbaits.  Its only a few dollars.  It solved my spitting problem.
Push the punch in and it creates a hole for swimbait shank to go through.

I like the 5 inch baits too and found that if I avoid the area where the color of the bait splits, I have much fewer issues.
