Headed up to mammoth lakes tomorrow.  Never been there! Will be fishing blind.  Any areas I should not pass up?  Temps in Mammoth are 60/24 this weekend!!!  Looking forward to seeing the area and will do my best to make sure I got porn to share......

Most of the fish in those lakes like Powerbait. Crawlers are great up there behind small flashers if trolling. Inflated crawlers work good too on the bottom. I used to fish Mary a lot. The far side of the lake when you approach it is where I do my best. You can launch in a couple spots along that shoreline real easy. Twin Lakes holds some brutes. The upper twin where the waterfall comes in is a great area if the weeds ar not too thick. Worms are good there. Mamie on the side past the dam and across from the lodge is a good area too. Troll along that shoreline towards the mountain. Underwater obstacles are everywhere in that lake. Most of the lakes hold lots of Brooke's. Browns EARLY at first light on small cranks and crawlers. Fnd underwater stumps or rocks and fish those areas hard. Rainbows are what most people catch in all those lakes. Horseshoe lake is a tough one. Never fished it much. If you want to travel take a ride to Convict nice drive, never really fished it too much. Big fishin that one though. You can take a Ride out to Benton Crossing above Crowley and head out through the gates to the north and fish in the Owens River. Artificial only. I used to as a kid fish in there a lot drifting worms under the banks. If you have a decent 4x4 there is a fun ride up the mountain to some semi remote lakes and streams. When you leave town headed south on 395 you will see I believe Sherman Creek rd. as you turn right of 395 look up the mountain in front of you. You will see a long rd headed up the hill and then start to switchback up the mountain. You can go maybe 6-8 miles or more in. Last time I went up there was early in July. One of the first trucks up there. Took 3hrs to travel about 2.5 miles. Rd should be better this time of year. Take a shotgun and you bird license up that way. Quail everywhere and they open this Sat. Same with duck season. Look for ducks traveling along the river if you get over there. II can tell you a lot more if you want to know. If the temp is 60/24 in town it will be 10 plus degrees colder at The lakes above Mammoth. The lakes are at least 2000' feet higher I think. Have fun and dress warm.

If you need more info when you are up there, call me at 916-202-2631. I don't have any more personal contacts down that way anymore since my friends sold the campground and resort, and my uncle died.

Its been a bit since out trip but wanted to follow up!

Rob thank you for the info for Mammoth Lakes.  First off, what a beautiful area! A little bit over 4 hours from Folsom and we were there ( much more enjoyable drive then a drive to SC) .  There must be 50 lakes up there to go fish.  We fished Lake Mary first, then Lake Mamie, Lake George and fished my personal favorite Lake Convict!  We stayed at Snow Creek Resort due to an awesome Living Social deal of $108 a night with full kitchen etc... Highly recommend the resort.

Every lake we fished had crystal clear water with visibility to 30-35 ft!!!  The big boy for the trip was caught on Convict Lake trolling a GULP RED WORM!!! It was  a beautiful rainbow I believe to be an older planter at almost 3 lbs! Lost count on how many planters up to 14" I kept releasing!

Many bank fisherman in the area of mammoth.  Occasional float tubers but seemed every lake was my wife and I's play ground! My next trip up there I will definitely pack warmer clothes.  Was 28F in the morning on the water at 7! Chilly!

We have been going to Rock Creek Lake for over 30 years. It's about 10 miles south of Mammoth on 395. Check it out next time.

You chose a great time of year to be down that way. I avoid summer months due to the crowds.

Convict is one of the prettiest places on earth for fishing.  Gotta go south again soon!
