Since you already have a fold out aluminum dolly why not try to make a saddle to attach to the aluminum & better fit/support your kayak hull?

I was looking at that, the problem I came across was that my kayak is rather wide, so I am looking at a yoke or goalposts that would have to span the kayak, then if they were bolted on, they would either be a giant set of steer horns hanging out the sides, or I would face dis-assembly each time I needed to load them. I am leaning towards this (See Below) type of dolly, because it is simple, and it lets the weight of the kayak rest on the crossbar, not on the scupper holes. Based just purely on the strength of the scupper holes, I would never use this type of dolly to move my OK Malibu 2, the plastic on that thing is downright flimsy, but my Wilderness Systems have all been very (heavy but) solid plastic.

In FFTC's defense, I never thought of lifting the boat sideways onto a dolly....... (still somewhat a challenge with a 88lb+gear boat) and Rob, I would be pleased to have a dolly class, and if you can fit my boat onto my dolly right under the seat, run an obstacle course I have devised and have no problems with it... Well you are a better man than I, because to me it is just a royal pain in my considerable ass to balance my boat on that goddamn thing...

I'll bring the beer this time (I still owe Totes for the profoundly awesome schooling he gave me earlier in the year.) :smt023

Yeah I have to disassemble the cart to put it inside the hull. The 30cm wheels are big & would take up too much room in my tankwell. Sometimes if the truck is close I'll just walk it back & leave it in the truck. I just bought the Trax2 cart with the smaller wheeleez wheels to save a little weight. I'm not getting any slimmer.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that only Hobies are designed to be used with scupper carts.  And even though they are designed for it, they still have issues with scupper's being cracked on occasion (warranty covers it though).  I'd say that most every other kayak out there isn't designed to use the scuppers for supporting the kayak and all the gear we carry.  I own two Hobie carts, and one Wheeleez cart, but I would never even think of using the Hobie cart on my X-Factor.  But will use the Wheeleez for almost every trip that I take.

My suggestion is to do some modding to your old cart to make it fit your kayak, or save up for the Wheeleeze and do the same.

Something like this maybe?

Some sort of horizontal addition to the cart at a width that works for the bottom of your yak?

I like that design better than what I have, it reduces the unsupported span of PVC. What holds the axle bolts into the PVC tee? is there a shim or a filler that keeps it centered in the 1" piping?

I just stick it through the scuppers on the top side an run a bungie to hold it down works great even with a milk crate

Yeah I've seen a few people do that but when I tried it was getting hung up going thru thick kelp. The Trax2 cart is really light weight & easily fits in the front hatch so I like it there to keep the tankwell clear.
