Hearing of this huge school of stripers has my mouth watering-- the earliest i can get there is wed about 5:30 -- any takers?

I have to get my rudder fixed--taking kayak in this evening. I may have him take it off until the parts arrive. Then I might be able to get there by 1730 Wed. Where to meet (the sand beach?) and what are you planning fishing with?

Is this the launch area. Looks clsoe to the lot and South-facing to the right of the Launch ramp with a nice beach.

I think I can be in too.  From experience when they say OP they usually mean the area between Candlestick and OP.  Tubes is usually a good bet and on high tide the launch at Tsing Tao.  Are you guys launching op or Tsing Tao.  I think if I go I will hit Tsing Tao.

well from what I hear there are two - maybe three schools...one off OP, one off the tubes and the BIG one off the airport...go figure.

I'm hoping we can get more intel tomorrow.
Low is at 6pm or so- buts its a 2.4- so not sure if tubes is a bet

My reasoning, correct me if I am wrong, is to start from South end of the three schools and troll through their likely positions into the incoming tide, i.e. start at OP and go North to the Tubes if we can make it that far. And of course, the airport is off limits since 9/11 (hope the Stripers don't know that). It is not that far to paddle from OP to the Tubes if I understand the distances correctly (assuming we don't have gale-force winds) and the schools move around anyway following the bait. Since low is at 1800, the good news is we'll float back in and given what I've heard about the Tubes and Tsing Tao, ebb tide is not the time to launch there  :smt009. Besides the Stripers (I hope) will have exited the Tubes area following the bait on the out-going tide and into the Bay off the Point. But what do I know?  :smt004

I may be able to hit the tubes a little early and then intel you guys. I get done with practice around 1 and then I can head to the outgoing tide at the tubes.  Low tide pretty much ruins OP too and if the wind is up the Airport is pretty much off limits unless you want a tough workout to prepare for ELK.

The tubes even a low slack tide should still produce fish about 75-150 off shore. My last fish I caught off the tubes was in 3 ft of water about 75 off the tubes. My next pass I started to head in a realized I was going to have to haul my yak over rocks to shore. That leads me to my next realization.  Launching at or near low tide can be pretty tough at the tubes or OP but especailly the tubes.  If you launch at OP from the boat dock it is a pretty good paddle to the tubes.  However by the Sierra Point peir you should be able to drop in fairly easy and have a short paddle to the tubes.

About the launch at OP. This may be all old news but it's the way I usually take. If you pass the entrance to the harbor there is a parking lot on the right. Then it's down to the small beach that's in the marina and out the first opening and you're ready to fish. Cool thing about this spot is it's not too bad if the tides go low.

I might have to join you guys tomorrow. I've fished there many times and haven't got the goods yet. :smt012

I should be there earlier in the day so might see you out there jselli. Red kayak with the lion head.
BTW, what is a good set up to get these Stripers? Krippled anchovy?

If you wanna check the wind conditions before you go there's a webcam at Coyote Point that can give you a good idea of what it might look like. Although it should be less wind than CP.

I was thinking of Sierra Point not Oyster Point. But SP is a tough launch if I remember the one time I walked around there (long before I kayaked)--mostly big rip-rap rocks.

Mooch, what's your theory on treble hooks on rattle traps, spoons etc.? I heard some people don't like them since they can mess up a fish's mouth that you'd release. Do you switch to regular hooks?

Also, do you pull off the front treble hooks lon crank baits ike Bill does to avoid tangles when trolling and landing fish?
