Went out on another halibut attempt,   Sabiki'd a half dozen large sardines to keep for bait.     Was going to freeze and use them later, but then read about  how healthy these are.   I marinated them ceviche style.   Turns out they're delicious !
Now I'm seriously considering going out with light tackle and catching more.    Fun to catch and tough fighting little critters.    A couple were over 12".

Couple years ago I ran into some small mackrel in Tomales bay,  too big for bait, I expected them to be fishy, but no,  darn tasty on the grill.  Froze a couple, when thawed, were crap.

Yummy, were at?

I saw some Spanish mackerel were caught in the Capitola area.  Also delicious.

Yeah,,, caught these just south of Capitola.     They might be spanish mackerals ,  all the identity pics seem to be vague.

I read that, about after freezing they turn mushy.

I just scaled , peeled out the backbone , then ate the skin and all.

Might they have been jacksmelt? that is what I saw  down there on Saturday?

My partner tim got 20# halibut (PB), and I caught two exciting bat rays.....plus inumerable kingfish which we tried using for bait to no avail.
