I noticed that both Mooch and I favor lefty casting reels even though we are righties.

I was just curious as to the opinions of the NCKA crowd were on this subject.

It is my firm belief that there is no need to change hands after casting, and I strongly prefer lefty reels.

The only time it is annoying is during flipping.

Thanks for the link.

I found that it was very easy to overcome the dominant hand over the submissive hand deal.

what's 'flipping'? I have heard it referenced, I just don't know exactly what flipping is, or pitching for that matter,
or why reel handedness would matter. something about letting the line out then swinging it rather than casting
it, but that' all I know.

Flipping is a close to cover technique used in bass fishing.

Basically you swing the bait like a pendulum towards the target.  You hold the rod in your right hand and pull out some extra line with your left, swing the bait out and let out that additional line with your other hand.

The reason that lefty reels sort of suck for flipping is that the reel handles point up and tangle on the line more often than righty reels that have the handles pointed down.

Pitching is like flipping except that you hold the bait in your hand and then swing the pendulum, and also the bail is open and you sort of cast it.  Kind of hard to explain.

I grew up using spinning;  Rod in the right hand crank with the left.
I'm just to stubborn to switch.  I only use left handed casting reels.

They can be a little tough to find in some models but well worth the effort

Left handed reels only for me thank you. Spinning, casting, fly; all of mine are left handed.

You must be flipping with your left hand holding the rod?

I got that wrong.

What I meant to say was that since the line is held in my left hand the line tangles on the handles pointing to the free hand holding the line.

If I was using a righty reel the line would not really do this.

I'm having no luck finding a left-hand, level-wind reel here in Monterey Co. Where do I need to go to find one? Thanks. Tim

I buy reels online as I tend to get better prices and exactly what I want.

Try bass pro shops or cabelas.
