Just back from 2 weeks at Camp Roberts and need a fishing break.  I need to build up spome WAF this weekend and and hopefully talk GF into going out to the jetty at HMB.  I have seen a more than a few fish caught out there.  I am hoping to get her more interested in fishing.

GF has 3 boats, but none of them are SOT's. So they are not really good  fishing platforms.  So the thought of fishing from the jetty at HMB crossed my mind, but the one thing I am not sure of, are the jetties considered to be licensce free or would she nee a one day?

I don't know if they are still there, but there have been reports of lots of bait at HMB. You can rent a SOT at HMB kayaks. Take some trout rods and she will have a blast  catching bait.

I debated the rental thing,  but I was looking for a low stress, go down hike the jetty (she loves looking for marine life of every size and shape).  Drop some lines and see what happens. I got some WAFFing to do between now and then.

When young and agile rock hopping on the jetty was a blast. Otherwise? My wife would not enjoy it.

Kev:

Welcome back!

Completely understand the need to build up some future credits ...

You might also want to consider the Pacifica Pier ... its also a no fishing license required zone, and might be a little more user friendly than Jetty, easy to access and park ... fishing in HMB would be better, but they are getting a few smelt off the pier as well ...

However, the best wife/girlfriend fishing action is to lake Chabot, rent one of those little electric boats, have a picnic, and troll for trout ... they are comfortable, they will catch fish now and again, and its super easy and accessible, girls like that trip ... issue is cost, not sure how expensive those little boats are for a few hours ... but something to consider.

If the salmon are remotely close to the pier forget it.  It will be every man for himself.  No gf is not a wussy chic, she just doesn't have the boat for it, and we have stuff we got to get ready for , like where the hell are we going for vacation in two weeks?  I have seen some decent fish caught on the jetty, so I was thinking that would be a decent spot.

Since I can remember, any man made structure such as a pier, jetty, or breakwater, has always been a no license required area in Ca. I imagine it's because our tax dollars were used to build and maintain them so they really couldn't charge us to use them.....at least for now that is.

No license.....and the west jetty closest to mavericks is fishier.   :smt001

1.88. PUBLIC PIER. A public pier is a publicly owned man-made structure that has the following
characteristics: is connected, above the mean high tide, to the main coastline or to the landmass of a
named and charted natural island; has unrestricted free access for the general public; and has been
built or currently functions for the primary purpose of allowing angling access to ocean waters.

Additionally, publicly owned jetties or breakwaters that are connected to land, as described above,
that have free unrestricted access for the general public and whose purpose it is to form the most
seaward protective boundary of an ocean harbor are public piers.
  Jetties, breakwaters, promenades,
sea walls, moles, docks, linings, barriers and other structures that are not the most seaward protective
boundary of an ocean harbor, are not public piers.

GF, makes me check the weather, swell and other related issues before we go anywhere.  I have seen some scary waves go over that , but the prediction is for 2-3 feet swell for most of the weekend.  I may bring he PFD's just to play it safe, that and I can be a clumsy MF when I don't want to be.
