I found that my stock Hobie seat got real uncomfortable after about 3hrs in it.  It was causing pain  just above my hips in my back.  Got a Surf to summit GTS seat to fix that issue.

Yep, it's the seat itself bro.

If you're using an aftermarket seat, do you use seat pegs to hold the seat down? I've tried my "crack of dawn" seat (which works great for me in my non-pedaling kayak) in my Hobie, but it slides around if I rely just on the straps---there doesn't seem to be any way to get the back-facing straps tight enough to make it solid. If I install seat pegs, the seat back doesn't seem to be rigid enough.

I bought the pegs, but haven't installed them  yet. I just tighten the straps real good. It shifts around even so like you mentioned. A temporary fix would be to put a small sheet of grip liner between your seat and kayak. It's the one you use to line a toolbox or cupboard to prevent the chinas from falling/slipping.

I'll keep an update once I installed those pegs on my gts seat.

While looking for ways to mount a Vantage style seat into either an OUtback or revo 13 I stumbled upon this gem:

hope it helps...

If I had an Adventure Island, I'd definitely consider it. But the adventure would be unstable with such a high center of gravity.

hope it helps...

I think I've solved the problem, at least for now. I got a thermarest inflatable trail seat for $20 at Mel Cotton's. After completely deflating the lumbar support, I inserted the thermarest between my back and the seat back (when seated, I raise it up a couple of inches). The pad is about 1.5" thick and works like a charm. I was out for 6 hours on Friday, with no hint of back pain. I'm not sure how well it's going to hold up longterm, but it's a great fix for now. The only issue is that it moves me forward a bit more than I'd prefer, but I can live with that.

Herb,

That looks great. I'm just wondering, does it raise your center of gravity much? I've got an adventure, and so I'm thinking that stability might be an issue with all of the padding underneath. In fact, my butt has no complaints, so I don't really need a thick cushion---just my back has issues.

Btw, my inflatable cushion only lasted 4 outings and now it's got a slow leak. So that's not going to be a permanent solution.

Well, I definitely can feel the difference with the extra padding height. Felt a lil tippy at first.  But after a few outings, I got so used to it wouldn't bother me much anymore and my butt and back thank me for it
