Hey guys :smt006

Was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing some sort of event that would be held at Whiskeytown Lake to decrease the population of squawfish or pikeminnow? Was thinking along the lines of just bragging rights and a fat potluck? Heaviest sack of trashfish gets to put some sort of signature on their profile? I dunno.

I snorkel in whiskeytown a lot and have noticed that there are way more pikeminnow and squawfish than ever before and a lot less of everything else.

If any locals or anyone is interested, let me know and I will reserve and pay for a nice area for us to either day use or camp.

Thanks
Jesse

I've noticed the same thing.  When I floated from French Gulch to the powerhouse I would pass schools of literally 100's of sizeable pikeminnows.  While I'm not advocating removal of these things entirely (they are native to the watershed), some selective harvest and garden fodder sounds fun and productive.  :smt001

Regarding spearfishing for them, I have no idea, but the clear waters of Wtown would be ideal.  It is a National Recreation Area and has some pretty strict regs, I suggest you research heavily and carry the regs with you if legit.

What kind of timeframe were you thinking Jesse?

I was thinking before it gets cold and when there is a break between other events.

I've noticed them in clear creek too. Any beach, inlet with flowing water and the cold water curtain are all heavily loaded with trashfish, so it leaves a lot of areas as to where we could group and launch.

I figure that it will be locals and that we should be able to come up with a location and time that will work. Any suggestions?

Sorry about the spearing regs on them guys! Can't say that I haven't pole-speared a couple hundred of them out of there when I was a teenager!

We go to Pillsbury every fall to load up on them, they make great crab bait.
