Well I finally manage my first saltwater fish on the fly in a kayak. I managed to land 6 black rockfish about 12 inches long in 5 to 10 feet of water working kelp edges with a size 2 white clouser. They were everywhere. Fellow fly rodders eat your heart out!

I couldn't believe it. When I saw a school dart away from under my boat, I knew it was on!

Congrats on the first saltwater fish on the fly in a kayak.  Thanks for the report and pictures Bill.

sinking or floating line? i always carry my fly gear with a 30' sinking tip but have yet to bust it out. If figure if Ive got to cast into rocks such as jetties and what not Id rather use the fly gear than spinning gear

I was using a rio outbound 30 foot shooting head that sinks at 6 inches per second. A sink tip would have worked just fine as I was only casting about 40 feet. I think if I had found them earlier in the morning I may have been able to coax a few up on topwater. Thanks for the id correction Jim and Allen. Rockfish ID is somewhat new to me.

No problem! I've been getting better at it, primarily through staring at tons of DOTY pics...  :smt002

Cool. I was about 50 feet away and I could hear your enjoyment! I was wondering why you were swinging your rod back and forth, until I heard 'I caught a rockfish on a fly'.

Awesome Bill, wait til you hook into something big.  My biggest saltwater fish was a 28 pound jack followed by a 24 pound jack on the next cast.  Both on topwater!
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!
