This is a SoCal report ---

I got my first legal California Halibut today!  Fishing on the "inside" at Cabrillo Beach here in L.A.
26.5"  long and 7 lbs.   We're having fish tonight!

I was OTW at about 6:30 am.  It was like glass.  No one else was fishing, aside from the morning party-boats.  I went straight to the receiver, waited my turn in line,  bought some live squid, put it in the bait tube that DPSHIM (Daniel) gave me in Santa Cruz over a year ago -- THANKS AGAIN, Daniel !!!  :smt004

I started working out in the deeper water. I got bit quite often then, I got one large lizard and winced.     I can catch those on plastic! So, I decided to move.

At about 9 am I took a "bio-break" at the ramp and went back to fishing.  I was just outside the boat ramp area when *BAM* I was on and I knew it was likely the right kind.  -- I decided to use my big net instead of the gaff to land it -- it was clearly a legal fish but I felt better about the net so .... I netted it.   Measured it.   Two guys in the Police Boat were watching me land it and came over ... so I got to gloat

I continued fishing until about noon with no more bites and then decided to get off the water.   As I got out "Taylor" was there taking the census so I got her to measure and weigh the fish, and take my picture.

I finally did what everyone's been telling me to do down here and it worked. (DUH).      I admit it.  I'm a slow learner.  That's why I'm a college professor.    I know it's a lot of pictures of one little fish ... but I had BLAST catching it ... and I'm cooking it for dinner tonight!

A legal hali is a legal hali, and deserves a write up.
Thanks for sharing the story & pics!

Thats awesome, I'll be there next month, same exact spot. You should try whites point royal palms too. Just around the bend.

This!

Fish that you caught yourself ALWAYS tastes better don't it? :smt003
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
