Forgot to thank Sean for sharing his knowledge about fishing Mendo. THANK YOU! He even set up everyone's rig and bought the live bait for us the night before. And he was more than happy to share his "secret" fishing holes. As soon as we headed towards the camp ground for a break - he gladly shared our success with a couple of guys who were fishing from their boat (they were not catching at all) - Sean is definitely an great Ambassador of fishing - always willing share and teach - we need more guys like this posting!  :smt023

It was really fun reeling in some big fish finally - I was using 6 # mono leader with the live bait that we were using - can't wait to try it again!

Cheers Sean! I still have a couple of Fosters with your name on it!  :beer2

I also forgot to mention - Lee and I were too tired to deal with our fish. so, I gave mine to my buddy Edsel.  Lee and I headed over to our regular Sushi Bar in Belmont called Sushi Monster. Lee gave both his fish to the Sushi Chef. We later went back to the Sushi Bar for Dinner - the Chef hooked us up with some free dessert and after that, he prepared one of the stripers for us to eat - he deep fried it and served it to us with some tartar sauce. Good stuff  :smt023  :fat

Sean,
Looks like another successful day for you.  I'll be trying my hand tonight right after work.  It sure makes the day long looking out the window at my kayak sitting in my truck.  I'll let you know how it turns out.
I'm gonna try to start fishing at least two nights a week after 6:00 if you're ever interested.

Steve

Joel,

You know you never keep your fish any way.  All you want is the picture of it.

You should really learn to catch and release.

I used to not like stripers because they're quite meaty and heavy for a white-fleshed fish, but then I smoked one :smt033 and that turned out awesome.  Smoked fish can just sit in the fridge under saran wrap and it'll be gone in a couple days.

Hey Sean - what is really amazing about the Striper fishing in Mendo is that we never even had to measure the fish we caught - it seems like all the fish in the lake are keepers.  :smt023

Have you actually caught an undersized striper in Mendo? :smt017

We will definitely be planning another trip up there soon! My buddy Lee is all fired-up!  :smt026

Which begs the question ... when did they plant Mendo?  Do you ever see small fish?  If not, does that imply they haven't planted in a while?  The fish in there are not naturally spawning, are they?

Allen,

There was a post earlier about Mendo just getting a plant recently. As far as small fish = we did not see any at all.

Sean  :smt025   "Mayor of Lake Mendocino" would be able to answer the spawning question.

They plant it and they reproduce naturally as well.  I have caught dinks.  I generally release my fish though.  I probably keep one out every 15-20 fish.

Josh,

Next time fillet the fish and cut out all the red meat under the skin.  Then bread and batter it.  Just like Fish and Chips.  Don't forget the tarter sauce.

HEY SCWAFISH - I'M GOING TO FISH LAKE MENDO NEXT WEEK AND WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON WHAT TO USE FOR STRIPERS. I'D REALLY LIKE TO HOOK ONE OF THOSE BAD BOYS.
