You picked up a Trevala now pick up a ugly stick. Wave them both around. There, see the huge difference? Being comfortable is much better than saving just a few meager dollars. The pleasure of having quality gear that handles well will be long remembered after the junk is sold at the garage sale.

I ordered the Trevala from West Marine so waiting for it to arrive. I picked up an Ugly stick and Penn today from Outdoor Pro shop so I can try to go halibut fishing this weekend. Hoping to land some fish just to get the feel of it on yak.

You're a real fisherman ... when in doubt, get them both!!!   :smt003

I have been using some of the smaller newell reels and they have held up for years ,they are graphite and stainless steel with the guts similar to that of a Penn . You can service them yourself pretty simply if you are in to that . Only catch no level winds  and need an educated thumb to cast . Definitely not a one size fit all reel . I have also been eyeing the revo toro nacl when I buy a new reel as I also can use it for striper stuff and heavy largemouth bass applications ,as far as rods goes it is personal preference I think but find the lightest rod that feels good in your price range . If I had to choose which to spend more on I would go with the reel  first . This is just an opinon and hope this helps you out.

Im probably the newest in the group but I love my Daiwa saltiga 35-2 speed. Its like 40+ inches of line per crank. Pull up anything we fish inshore or offshore. A bit over overkill but couldnt help myself. Its currently on a okuma nomad travel rod ml- l tips. Getting a smaller reel soon, gonna go with a lexa 400 when it comes out on a calstar or trevala.
