Its time for me to do something instead of hanging my yak out the back of my Ford Ranger. Ive looked at bed extenders and know Harbor Freight has them for $69. Ive also seen lite duty lumber style racks on Ebay for $80 or so delivered. Im thinking I want to get a lumber style so I can carry two, it will also double as a makeshift tent for overnites with a tarp and bungees. I also ride dirt bikes so I need a removable rear bar so I don't have to remove the rear bar to load up my bike. I see where some of these racks have a quick mount/release device for attaching to the bed, but would like to just remove the rear cross bar.

So any thots or suggestions as to which maker I can look at. I can also modify one myself as I have a mig, and ability, etc.

I use a lumber rack on my Toyota. Works great. Even for two or three yacks. Much more reliable then overpriced official rack systems. Plus it makes people think you are manly and know how to fix shit.

I use a Harbor Freight bed extender with Yakima Hulley rollers on my Tacoma. It has tie down loops on both ends and its wide enough for 3 kayaks on their side. It's super easy to get my Cuda on and off since its so heavy.

I have been using a HF lumber rack for almost a year now. Just swapped trucks and I think I'm going to go to a different set up. I'll let it go for $175.  Here's the link.

I put 2 sets of the Yakima Outdoorsman 300 supports on my Tacoma, I did some pretty extensive work to get them permenantly installed, and I already had the bars, and 5 years ago they were cheaper.  Unfortunately they seem over priced at the moment.

Anyway I've been happy with them, although the bed attachment out of the box is crap.

The bottom of the crossbars is 25 inches above the bed rail, on my truck that's 43" from the bed, is that enough to get the dirt bike in without issues?

I carry 2 30" wide yaks top down side by side with no issues.

The rear bar would have to be removeable or the whole rear piece. Lumber rack may be the way to go since they come with removeable bars and are longer to support more of the yak

ditto. I use these on my F150....Two yaks side by side. Simple 3/4" nut to remove them. Takes 5 min per bar. I had to hunt on CL for a month or so but I am happy with them. I also have the bed extender and use it for quick local trips

If your handy with a welder, I can let you get measurements off my rack, I got it from us racks here in madera it was $400, but you could probably build it for less than $100, I bought mine instead of building it because I wanted it powder coated and I wouldn't have saved any money having to powder coat a home built.
