Thinking about taking the family camping at Doran beach and taking the kayak out for a few hours...whats the salmon/rock fish prospect there?

Essentially no salmon reachable by kayak near the coast yet from that I have heard of. Should be decent rock fishing if you can find some good structure or kelp. Maybe worth giving halibut a try. I have not fished there but good luck.

I and others have caught salmon near the 1 mile buoy. Sometimes they are there and sometimes not. We did well on crabs yesterday down by the Estero Americana. There were massive numbers of baitfish 150' off Doran about half way down the beach on Monday. There should be something going after them. Had a whale come up 30 feet from us down by The Estero.

I too have caught salmon off the head in a kayak. I used to have a buddy who worked at the marine lab and we launched off the beach there  :smt004 . The do catch salmon off the estero almost every year in July. It's hit & miss both areas. The last several weeks fish have been at the whistle buoy. Several of the wash/boiler rocks hold quite a few black rockfish. Also both jetties hold rockfish but timing is critical. Early morning/late evening-essentially low light conditions will bring you the most success. Again it's mostly blacks Last fall I even hooked a small thresher off the longer jetty on a 1/4 lead head with a swimming fluke. Unfortunately my gear was a little light-medium spinning rod/reel and 10lb test  :smt013 . It was a fun 5 minutes though. Good luck!

I forgot to mention there should be halibut in the harbor now. Live bait is what I've had success on. The bend at Cambell beach usually holds some. Good luck
