I will be taking a 5 days vacation in Cabo in 3 weeks and was planning on doing some shore fishing off the beach from the hotel. I will be bringing my Okuma Nomad travel rod but have no idea what kind of lures I can throw on the water and what fish I expect to catch. Any suggestions?

I was there for a week about 10 or more years ago.  We fished bait on Drop Shot type rigs in the rocky areas and Carolina Rigs in the harbor and similar calm sandy areas.  Didn't really use artificials but did catch random fish on bait.

Don't really know what to expect but just planning on having a line in the water before the wife and kid wakes up for the morning.   :smt003

Pencil Poppers
1-2 oz Croc spoons blue and silver
1 oz hair raisers with a worm tail (white)
Bait rig for toro and roosters

There is a tackle shop near Cabo Wabo run by a guy named Stephen Jansen. All he sells is shore fishing stuff. He has a custom designed lure called the Cabo Killer which is great if the roosters are around. You will know if they are there because they push the bait to the surface and all the locals will be throwing lures. You can go there and buy your lures.  http://www.cabosbest.com/cabo-surf-fishing.html Really nice guy and his dogs are cool too. He makes some really nice T shirts too. Tell him I say hello. Get up and sunrise and fish the river bed area of Medanos beach. Fish the sunset bite too. All the locals will be there. If you speak Spanish, start a conversation and they will tell you how to fish the area. The pangas make bait off the beach and will sell you some if the roosters or toro are around. None of the fish are worth eating except for sierras. The puffer fish are poisonous so try not to touch them. If you have a hand line bring it. The locals make them out of PVC. I've caught a ton of fish there and the locals will respect you if you carry a rod and speak spanish.

We will be on the San Jose side of Los Cabos.  I don't want to do charter since this will probably piss off the wife and ruin the short amount of time we have together in Cabo with the kid and friends.  But I would be insane if I don't at least attempt to throw something in the water though..been reading up on poppers and I might just invest in some.  I have the rooster tails and the swim baits.  Just need some spoons as well I guess.  I have the Nomad rod which I think is too short for casting but it will have to do for now.
Thanks guys

San Jose Del Cabo is a big surf area and you will need something to cast a country mile. Personally I would panga fish. They are not too expensive and you can bring the family. They will target whatever you want to fish. Go at the beginning of the week and you will have fresh fish all week.

Fresh sashimi all week!
I might just follow your advise since the kid and wife love sashimi

I am in Trinidad and not home but my buddy says the Roosters are thick this year!

Walk the beach looking for either bait fish jumpin or fish crashing the surf. Throwing  poppers (slow loud retrieve) is best. Once a fish is after your lure go FAST!
Stephan has a shop in SJ now by the Playita and carries everything and gives free/honest info.

I'll be back in Nov and any NCKA'ers that want to Surf fish I'd love to meet and go fish. I have extra gear so don't worry about bringing any.
