fantastic... any suggestions on color? is there something that has worked a bit better than everything else? i have just taken what i have seen hanging out of the fish's mouth in  your fish prn pics and just copied it for the most part. but if there is some shades/patterns that have been shown to work better than others that would be appreciated as well.

What you got looks pretty standard. They like some stuff more then others (MAYBE). I love anything with alot of  Glitter on the underside and a darker top.I try matching  pac 'chovie. then when that rips I grab what ever is in reach and put it on  :smt005. RF and lings are not so picky bro Ive seen them caught on craftsmen wrenches and butter knifes, even heard of a ling caught on a banana peel. Get comfortable with your yak in  the salt. learn to dance the dance with the pacific first, then let your Lures Tango with the depths  :smt002

do you realize how hard it is to not shoot right out to the salt ESPECIALLY after seeing the bounty everyone pulled in from the last Shelter Cove trip... man.... that is some stuff that needs to have a TV show made out of it. after seeing all that ridiculous stuff that gets caugt it makes me wat to get in that salty goodness so fast.  the only thing that has my spidey senses tingling is all this talk about the landloard and how everyone is bringing it up. its enough to make me tuck my tail and cheer from a distance and i havent even gotten my feet wet yet.
the main thing that is making me take so long before i go to the salt is that I havent had anyone to go with yet and budy up with. i definitely wont go out in the salt for the first time solo. that is just dumb. so that is why it is taking a while...

I've become a believer in that rootbeer glitter.  I fish an area for an hour with a white scampi -- nothing.  First cast after I switched to the rootbeer glitter ... BAM .. mr 32" ling.

Coming to the PIF event in Half Moon Bay?  Will be a great way to get your feet wet in the salt.

I kill'em with the twin tail scampi you have there, haven't had much of a need to use anything else yet.

Definetly on the right track with the jigs.  I always carry something brown, something white, sometimes green, then some shiny iron jigs 2-4oz, doesn't seem to matter much which one. Of course then I got a bunch of other stuff I don't even get to.

One of the top producers for me is the Halloween color 6.5" Big Hammer swimbait on a 4oz dark colored head, it might be because that's what I start off with in water 40+ ft and never change as long as it's working.  I started using it due to all the talk on this site, and it seems to be true.

Andy1976 on NCKA makes and sells some great jigheads, also wildernesshunter has in the past but I'm not sure about now, they both use a sharper finer wire hook that I like better.  Give'em a shout.

I order my Big Hammers from Charkbait, if I can't find them local.

With all that said don't overlook just a chunk of squid on a big hook.

Yeah dude. 4oz jig head, 6.5" big hammer (señorita, calico hunter, redrum, Halloween) and when a fish barfs up an octopus or squid, pin that to the hook and send it back down. I always put Pro-Cure gel on my Swimbaits I usually use anchovy flavor.

Just let your jig hit bottom, crank up so it's not resting on the bottom and bounce that thing on the bottom. Something will eat it. Take lots of pictures and get back to us.

that's an EXCELLENT "starter kit" you have there. Any swimbait color will work....some work better that others, but in the end, they all will catch fish.
Your HairRaiser will get destroyed by the mid-depth schoolies.
The scampi will get hammered by Lings and Cabezones and good quality Rockies
The swimbait will (same as above)

Just REMEMBER THIS! It is best to go, when the Ocean allows you.

Just make sure you bring extras. You will lose tackles for sure. Some days  have more snags than others. And some days you lose none. Just come prepared to be on the safe side.

I've probably caught more saltwater fish on that 5" rootbeer scampie w/ a squid strip than everything else combined...a solid multi-species performer that's always in my arsenal.

If you need more big hammers let me know, also grab a few pline laser minnows. 1oz up to 3oz, throw 'em in the kelp for some greenling action. As far as color I'm a firm believer in confidence, of you belive a color will work it will. Don't over think it. I see a lot of people asking what's working OTW then get disappointed they don't have the exact color.  Just cover your bases, reds, greens, light and dark colors, then fish with confidence and you'll do just fine.

For sure. I've lost as many as 15+ rigs in one day fishing. Caught a ton of fish though in steep pinnacles. Some days lose none.

Add a couple of these in various chrome or mackeral patterns and you're golden.
