i was wondering if when you are jigging for rockfish/lings/halibut or whatever do any of you run the stinger hook that trails back towards the tail of the bait i think they call the hooks that you can attach to the original hook Siwash hooks? is that right? i have tried them before, it would seem that running one of those would eliminate the short strike from when they bite the soft tail of the bait with no hook. I have had it happen before where they will bite short and i will see teeth marks just behind the hook and think tomyself..... whyyy meeeeeee and then i proceed to shorten the bait to set the hook further back on the swimbait or whatever i am using...
is that something that you all actually do or does that take away from the overall action of the bait?

attaching that open hook to the original hook then crimping it down with pliers to make it "permenant"

Short strikes are generally just smaller fish, running a stinger will nab you a fat stringer of gophers  :smt001
In lieu of a stinger I'd just run a smaller bait. My $.02

I have found this to be my opinion as well. Stinger hooks work well for me when I fish actual bait like squid or sardines,  but I skip 'em on my swimbait lures.

I never use a stinger with my swimbaits. If I get a short bite, I just make the same cast again. Usually you'll end up with a little 6" rockfish... I pretty much assume if it isn't big enough to slurp up the whole (usually 6.5") swimbait, it isn't worth my time.

I use a stinger treble hook when fishing bait. You do get hung up on rocky areas.

I used to do a lot of halibut fishing with a "trap rig" (fixed treble on the terminal end, sliding single above) and live bait, but these days I RARELY fish bait at all. I have MUCH better luck (and more fun) using swimbaits.

I keep it pretty simple. Straight 20-lb P-Line CXX hard tied to a 1-3 oz lead head and a 5-6.5" swimbait in some kind of white or baitfish pattern. Fish it over rocks; catch rockfish and lings. Fish it over sand near rocks; catch halibut (with a slightly different retrieve).

When that happens, I just immediately chuck it back out there without a tail while I'm still in the spot. You'd be surprised what stupid-looking things will catch rockfish!!!

I know a very sucessful dude that uses them on the swimbaits and does well. He uses a treble on cable though secured to the jig eye on 9" lures.

Personally I go the hardest route and have another rod rigged with a smaller plastic. If I feel the need for schoolies I can chuck that at em.
