i told the wife about this trip and she isnt totally against it, lol. she is concerned about that first salt trip but she didnt say no right off the bat so that is always good for bringing a glimmer of hope! i will keep mentioning it to her. is there an address that i can look at so i can pull up this location on google earth to take a look?

if i was able to go what are some "must haves" for this trip so i can start looking into it. i dont get cold that easily, like truly cold, so would a wet suit be completely neccessary?

It really depends on your kayaking skills regarding a wet suit. Based on what I have observed from your posts  , I would say yes. Can you do a self rescue quickly in the ocean? Are you planning on going out far in the ocean? Can you handle yourself in quickly changing conditions? The ocean is not a place to think you can handle the situations that you do not count on. I can count numerous times when I have launched into the  oceanonly to have conditions change very quickly and if not prepared things can go from an enjoyable day to one for concern. I always seem to either where a full wet suit and farmer john with splash jacket out on the water. You should also if you plan on going out.

To check out TC on Google, type in Timber Cove Boat Landing and you will get there (21350 Hwy 1, Jenner, CA).
Hopefully the winds will not be similar to this weekend.  Photo attached.  Check out the forecast before you head out.

3mm wetsuit, VHF, and PFD. In my opinion these items are required, with this you are pretty much good to go. Other items to consider are neoprene boots and a bilge pump.

sacramento heat is getting super gross.

yeah i havent ever been to the salt before it looks like i will have to get some more gear. i will probably just plan for the worst and if it bad out there (assuming i go) i wont even go out far at all if at all. i wont go into something i feel sketchy about.

WBTE,

Please don't take offense, but it sounds like you're just not ready for the salt off Timber Cove, (IMHO).  Spend the next couple weeks getting some time in your boat, flop over a few times (with PFD) and try getting back on the yak, shop around for that gear (then get it).

Do a ton of reading in our safety first section.  especially this one, http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=27534.0

Rockfish is open for the rest of the year around here.

One bad experience might dampen your whole outlook on the sport.

Please excuse my attitude, I'm just a safety first nut.

What he said. This shiz is not to be taken lightly! Self rescue is harder than it looks or sounds. Learn it first. Then go out and slay 'me.

I'm in; I'll be sleeping in my minivan Friday night and launching at first light, wx permitting. Hope to fish with friends old and new.

Lucas,

As far as self recovery you know what to do and how to do it after this weekend's hook up.  I would go on the salt with you.

Few things you will need.

farmer john
neoprene socks/boots
whistle
compass
pump - can use mine if needed
tackle
game clip - I have one you can borrow

There is more I know but if you go out with me we will be fishing pretty close to each other the whole time
