Marmite this is a "human powered" only event but I know a lot of peole would like to see your setup so bring it along, just don't use it during the event  :smt003

HMB does not hold a lot of secret spots, a few highlights:

1. The green bouy - Once you make it out the jaws of the harbor hang a right (west??) and make your way to the green bouy. There is a reef that runs from the bouy north.

2. Mavericks Reef - Right off the point with the big radar dish. Good fishing but be ware of the swell size.

3. The beach - Drift the beach for halibut, Straight out of the mouth flat sandy area.

Last years winning ling came from spot #1. A fishinder will be your friend to find the structure.

Bill, I just responded to your email.  A couple of questions - 1) Any thoughts on how the tide might effect fishing/safety there (At the gate - 5ft high @ 4am and 0.3 low @ 10am)? and 2) What do we need to bring for the BBQ?

Tides for HMB:

Code: [Select]
2006-07-16 2:56 AM PDT 4.66 feet High Tide
2006-07-16 6:01 AM PDT Sunrise
2006-07-16 9:18 AM PDT 0.36 feet Low Tide
2006-07-16 12:27 PM PDT Moonset
2006-07-16 4:04 PM PDT 5.63 feet High Tide
2006-07-16 8:30 PM PDT Sunset
2006-07-16 10:33 PM PDT 1.45 feet Low Tide

It should not be to bad, as long as it does not go minus everything should be good. I was there on a big minus a few weeks ago and it was still fishable. Those are actually pretty good since I like to think fishing at the tail end of a tide change is best.

I think we have enough stuff for the grill but some kind of chips/dip etc would be cool.

I just signed up for the derby.

Since I only have experience fishing out of Santa Cruz and have used primarily live bait--either purchased anchovies or smelt that I have caught, I was wondering if the experienced can tell me if I should try and use live bait or go with artificials?  Can live bait be purchased in HMB?  If artificials are preferred, can I get some advice on some good ones to buy.  I only have Saturday to get outfitted and can go the the Fisherman's Warehouse to get what I need.

Thanks,

Doug

I think they sell live bait at the harbor, I only use artificals though so I have never purchased it there.

The guys at FW will be able to help you pick out some lures. Get at least a 3oz and a 6oz iron, some 3oz leadheads and some swimbaits and scampis that should take care of you.

I don't know if I'll bring the outboard this time since it won't be useful, but thought someone (like Luis) might interested in the setup.

I considered a electric trolling motor setup initially but found that available motors were too heavy and would make to kayak too off centered.  Also the weight of the battery, which had to go in the forward hatch, overloaded my kayak and made my bow too heavy.  I settled on using a 1.2 HP outboard that weighs 13 lbs.  It's not too heavy and can go a long ways on a pint of gas. It helps to maximize the time I can fish vs. be in transit.  Because the faster velocity can pitch the kayak forcefully if you hit a wave tangentially, I have put outriggers to add stability and because the outboard still needed to have some counter weight to keep the kayak centered.  I'm still working on improving some of the dimensions--primarily shortening the outriggers to improve maneuverability at the cost of a bit less stability.  The harness for the aluminum transom is made out of carbon fiber/resin and allows me to attach it securely to the hull without putting any permanent holes in the kayak.  The bait tank is molded from fiberglass.

Doug,

Wow (jaw drops), I am impressed with your setup.  I have considered an outrigger setup but have not had the time and skill to fabricate anything close to your setup.  Maybe one of these days, I'll get a chance to see your motorized setup.

After some recon in HMB today, I will be fishing from north to south along the Half Moon Reef heading to the South East Reef (37deg28.26'Lat, 122deg28.80'Long) which is 2 miles south of the harbor. If anyone wants to join me, the company is welcome. I own a yellow malibu 2 XL.
