Sorry if this has already been asked, also not trying to ask for anyone's secret spot. I was out at Santa Cruz yesterday going for rockfish and I couldn't find any reefs to fish from. I was always hitting sandy bottom. I was using my FF with GPS and couldn't find any rocky bottoms. I peddled from the harbor towards the Boardwalk and drifted back. Any suggestions would be great, as I want to go back out soon. Thanks!

You can fish the area you describes every day for the next 100 years, and you will not pull up a thing! Trust me, I learned the hard way. Head for the mile buoy, or by the lighthouse, just watch the crab pots.

Not so, I've witnessed nice halibut scored from there.  Rockfish, now that's a different story.

Steph:

They're correct.  you turned the wrong way.  Straight out to the mile buoy and slighlty east at 50ft there's little outcrop reefs.  due east mile buoy 60FOW iholds rockies and lings.

(and, I've caught plenty of flatties between the harbor and the SC Wharf, even a random lingcod or two.....)

yellow sailing buoy in 40FOW off of Black's Point (first point to the east of harbor) has fish right now.

the area is flat and sandy with outcrops of shale, and plenty of fish, though smaller variety.  today Brandon from Fresno and I got limits out there by 10:30am.  they were biting on shrimp flys, whole squids, and swimbaits (Probably EVERYTHING, that's all we had!)

Anyway next time give me a call or a PM and I will steer you in the right direction...

There's usually a group of fishing boats  in that area.        Also some nice Cabbies to add to the score.

Doh so I went the wrong way! lol. Thanks for the info everyone. I need to mark these spots on my FF so it's easier to find next time. I saw a buoy straight out of the harbor but wasn't sure if I'd make it back before the wind picked up. I wonder if that was the mile buoy? Funny I found one tiny patch of kelp and tied up to it, sat there jigging for about an hour!  :smt044
