Has anyone, or does anyone store their kayaks this way? Or at least knocked the idea around to conserve ground space in their garage? I have seen the pulleys for it and it doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to do but i was wondering would it be worth it to look into something like that>?

I hang 2 of mine this way. I made wide saddles so as to not warp or bend my yaks. Works real good. I still bump my head on them from time to te but its better than walking around them all the time
Where did he go george

I have a high ceiling in my garage, and have rigged up a pulley system for one of my kayaks. Very easy to do, with all the hardware available at Home Depot. I had to rig mine to pull up the kayak pretty high so it clears the garage door.

My other kayak sits on heavy duty arm hangers: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Crown-Bolt-50-lb-Gray-Steel-Heavy-Duty-Arm-Hanger-18042/202305548#.UYmFhko6dBo.

Harbor freight has a bicycle hanging kit that works great for yaks for $12.

I hang my outback like this, but upside down. I got the pulleys from Home Depot. So far so good. It's almost been a year now.

I  made a pulley system but it was difficult to use. I think my pulleys were to small. I then bought a Garage Gorilla eletric hoist but haven't used it yet. One thing I did which you might consider is I made a cradle. Took a cheap area rug, one of those 5 x 7' ones from Big Lots and I cut it in 8-10" strips. Put two holes in each end. Looped rope on the underside of the strip lengths. I linked the strips together about a foot apart.  connect the loops over the top of the kayak with caribiners and hook the caribiners to a bar. Eliminates stress points

Harken makes a system for just this purpose.  A bit pricey at about $100-120.  I had/have one I had setup in my apartment garage for about a year.  Need to dig that out again.  The one thing I liked about it was:  4:1 ratio for easy lifting (maybe the ratio was 6:1 ... anyways) & the boat would not drop if you let go of the line.  You had to pull the line a certain way to lower the boat.  The straps under the yak were about 1 to 1-1/2" wide though.  I like the cradle idea.

Looks like I have that same one as Joesmoe. It stumped me for awhile as far as the install but it works great. Just change out the rope if you decide to get it because the one that comes with it is garbage. btw my kayak is about 90 lbs with all the crap in it hanging there in the pic. This is where I got it from.

I realize that I'm posting on an old thread but thought this was worth mentioning.  I stored my first OK Trident 11' and now store my Hobie Revo this way hanging from the ceiling with pulleys.  The Revo hull was starting to distort so I flipped it hullup so the top of the yak is supporting the weight.  I caught it early enough that it wasn't a problem and no issue since flipping it over.

Never had any issues with the trident but hull was thicker or stronger than the Revo.
