Slight change:

Place side bets at the black Chevy truck pictured below, not a white Tacoma. Too much crap to fit the Taco. Also a gratuitous Shelter Cove rockfish pic.  :smt006

So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I think it's a copper - they can be dullish orange like that.  The canaries I've seen are brighter in the orange as well as the lighter parts - like 50-50 Bar colors.

See that white stripe running down its side.
I'm pretty sure that's a canary

Either way, I just ordered the Rockfish ID poster.  Probably won't be here by GS7, but at least I'll have it for the future.

You guys need to work on your rockfish ID. Coppers have a clear area on the last third of the lateral line. Canaries lateral line stripe goes the entire length of the fish.

Coming from an inlander too!  Nice work, Ed!   :smt001

That ID poster is a good thing to have, Michael.  DFW has been at GS that last few years handing some out along with some ID booklets, Shelton Descenders, measuring stickers...etc.

Canaries are much more mottled on the head and shoulders.  Colorations can definitely overlap and be confusing, but the 50-50 Bar coloring is pretty common whereas the coppers, even if orange, are not so bright - it's like their coloring has some extent of brown mixed in, while Canaries have a yellow undertone.

The bar and the tail say copper. Canaries have a distinct grey/silver tip at the end of the forked tail.
