Joe and I launched at 7ish to what looked like good conditions.  Turned out to be marginal at best.  The wind was down and the launch was easy.  However, after paddleing just past the point the chop and swell was tough.  The swell was mixed, probably left over wind swell from our windy week combined with a 5.5 ft swell every 7 seconds.

Decided to troll for salmon right off the bat but we were getting pushed around pretty bad.  The thought of the wind coming up with the swell the way it was turned us into cowards and we went inside the bay for rockfish.

Jigged assorted baits from iron to swim for nada.  As we contemplated what to do next we saw a party boat drop it's net only a hundred or so yards from where we were, but over sand.  We packed in our rockcod gear and began to troll again. This time we had higher expectations but again nada.  The party boat never boated any fish we went back to rockfish after 15-20 minutes or so.  The swell was still pretty bad but getting better.  We managed four rockfish and 1 underling.  Not great considering the water clarity was superb and the drifts were pretty good.

Came in for a crash landing in waves that varied between 2ft and 4.ft.  4 being the most common and got burried just before jumping out. Not bad, gear was stowed and the weather was nice so getting wet was alright by me.

The water improved dramatically as the day progressed and I expect it to do so in the comming days. Hopefully salmon will be on soon. I will be on a non fishing family vacation, (see sean white for ideal vacation tips)  but hope to return in a week to good news and lots of salmon.  I may make one more trip early Sunday morning before heading to Disneyland.

Thanks for the report Selli....I'd like to do a "Blue Kayak" run but I don't want to do it alone. I'm thinking of a paddle from LM to Montara for either Salmon or Halibut. I'm just hoping for better conditions  :smt011

Mooch, I think the problem with that is the pickup or drop off with the slide closed. That is a long drive...

Is it about 1.5-2 miles from launch to around the point?  Looks like a long trip to Montara, but I'm just guestimating using Google Earth.

No worries about the road being closed; it doesn't look like one would survive the landing!!!  Lots of white water in those pics...

I would like to paddle around the point and try along the rocks for lings and RF.

John and I paddled that area last year - on a very calm day. I caught some greenlings and JD caught an underling - nothing great. We paddled all the way to Egg Rock (the rocks covered by bird crap - that you could see when your driving on South bound on Devils Slide) Caught nothing but we did not stay very long as the wind and swells began to pick up. I also noticed that there is a seal colony living on the other side of Pedro Point (South side). I was kinda spooked because none of them were swimming out in the open - they seemed to be weary and tucked into the kelp and rocky shoreline - made me wonder if the Land Lord was swimming around - trying to "collect" rent  :smt009

The place seems fishy, I'd go out there again - but not alone  :smt002

thanks for the report jason, that will save us east bay guys a trip tommorrow, much appreciated. as for montara beach, it is scary, steep and rough with an offsore sandbar, so the waves break twice.  i would never land there, but on a calm day i would love to explore more of devil,s slide.  i don,t think it will be calm tommorrow.

I didn't catch any fish but all the reports are that the fish are north of LM.  straight off the pier even. If I had to I would hang a right and head toward the pier.

Just my 2 cents

Mooch, you've never heard about the resident land lord that patrols the waters out there off of montara beach, i heard its rumored to be a female.  There is more than 1 land lord also.  I know some long time residents of linda mar and they were telling me some interesting stories on the fourth about 1 particular white that is over 20' long.  Yeah, if i was a seal, i'd wait till december to get back in the water.

Jason, thanks for the report,  some good intel I received today was that the bite was simply better up by muir.  Read that in a couple posts here on this board also.  Have a good time on your vacation.  I'm still gonna try pacifica but probabley not till next week now.  JTF..

same conditions up at Muir, mixed up as hell but the wind is all happening offshore Bumpy ride and I had one eye on the conditions outside all day thinking it was going to hit hard but never did Only got maybe 2 miles offshore

The paddle from Pedro to Montara isn't that bad I've hit it from both sides but it never seems to pay off

If I was going to put that mileage in right now I'd be more inclined to go straight out from either HMB or LM

A little bit of luck involved there but seems like you'd run into something along the way
