Went out to Muir Beach on Friday to see how crabby it is.  The seas were calm, but the launch and landing still required some work due to small breakers.  I dropped my traps between 1/2 to 3/4 mile off shore.  Saw a dorsal fin behind me when I was putting out my last trap, I couldn't tell if it was a porpoise or a shark, but I wasn't upset that I didn't see it again to get a better chance to ID it.  Went back to shore and planned on diving a little, but the vis was like 2.5 feet, so that was short lived.  Saw a whale partially breach out by one of my buoys which got the beachgoers (and me) a bit excited.  I let the traps soak for a meager 3.5 hours before going out to check them.  When I pulled them up, they were HEAVY (boo-ya!).  Between my 3 traps, there were about 50 dungeness, 17 that were legal, so I got to pick and choose my 10.  Overall, it was a great day, but I can imagine that if the surf/swell is any bigger, it could be quite a challenge to land your yak without a tumble.  Also, its a bit of a trek from the parking lot to the water, so carrying the yak is a little tougher (my shoulder is gonna be sore for a few days, bring wheels if you have em).

Wow, what a crabby haul.  I don't think I could go for a swim in 2 1/2 foot visibility after seeing a dorsal fin, for sure.

I was just wondering about muir this morning.  Great job on those crustaceans man!!  That spot is a hassle and a half to launch from, especially alone, even with my wheels!   The landing made me nervous when I was there.

Thanks for the marin coast report.

You have any plans to go back out there anytime soon?  I know some halibut live there and its been too long I've slapped one in the deck.

RAWYAK, I want to get back out there again ASAP, but probably not for a couple weeks.  I am still in a little bit of shock as to how crabby it was there, I had been driving South for my crab exploration the past few years, looks like I found the honey hole in my own backyard!  I would love to go after some halibut with you, I've never gone for them in Cali, just Alaska, so let me know...
