Since I already made the harpoon, it seemed like I ought to make a kage to match it.
I'll probably never use this on a tuna but a guy can dream. :smt044
I used a ss threaded rod ground to a triangle point, made it shorter overall, and put some hemp cord on for grip. Why am I suddenly hungry for ahi?

thanks Scott, but yours is a classy bit of work and more subtle.

The rod on mine is about 12" exposed, and the overall length is about four feet. I made the threaded rod a little longer than some of the ones I have seen on the internet so that it would balance the whole thing better for using it one handed. It certainly feels like it would stick through something substantial.
The handle is a piece of fir dowel.

Love it Sean!  I'd say use the Kage instead of a gaff!  No more needing to bonk them on the head, just stab them in the head!  :smt044

went & measured it yesterday and it is actually 3'4".

I went ahead & made a matching bonker from the cut off piece. I'll post pics later this evening.

Aw shucks, thanks Buhdee!

From the little I know, The kage is what has evolved from a japanese style of fishing gaff.  The preferred straight gaffs to ones with a curved hook. I think the name "Kage" refers to a martial arts spear of similar style. If you watch the Hawaiian guys they use kages often on the tuna and wahoo they catch. By sticking the fish through the brain it effectively stuns them so they don't flail around as much. By using a threaded rod rather than a smooth one, the spear "holds" the fish better.

As I said, I'm kinda doubtful this one will ever get used as I have been perfectly happy with my little custom gaff on everything I've caught with it, but I had all the pieces and I did think that a matched set of tools would be a fun project. Since the looks of the tools are based on a sketches from a graphic novel I once entertained ideas of drawing it has been REALLY cool seeing them form into actual tangible items from what was once just a page in my sketchbook.

Eh, its what happens in winter when I'm not fishing the salt :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
