Hello all,

I have spoken to a few of you on my first post, but felt it was necessary to make it official under the "introduction" tab of this forum.

I am from East Texas, but have lived my last decade in Dallas.  I am currently dirt biking out here and love it...but you all know there is no replacing the fun of fishing ...

I hope to be purchasing a kayak soon.  My last was a "sit-in" with a shallow storage in front and large deep in the rear.  It worked...but we always want more right?

Now living in an area of option (salt and fresh water) ... what do yall use?  I know some of you probably have rigs for any and every scenario, but I want one kayak. lol.

Obviously any suggestions would be wonderful...I really like the style of the Santa Cruz Kayaks, but I am trying not to drop a 1000 on a kayak at the moment.

Best Regards,

LilRiverMan

I like this one...I know it is bare bones... but what do you all think?

someone is bound to chime in here... there are members of NCKA who sell kayaks and/or work at kayak shops.  Hook up with them and do demos and find a yak that suits your needs and budget.  This is not the kind of thing you want to buy sight unseen.

You can do a ton of research online which I would suggest.  The add you linked has a choosing a yak article on the page, that's a good place to start.

A 10 ft yak would mostly be suitable for a pretty lite adult, so consider your size and the weight of the stuff that we all pile in there.

The other thing that sometimes doesn't get enough consideration is how easy is it going to be to handle getting to and from the water by yourself cause I think many times yak fishing is a solo thing.

Tons of stuff to look at and think about before you buy.

Used is a great place to start.

Hi Tex:  I started by using a program that CCK  at Jack London Square had going.  You could pay a deposit, and then try several different types of kayak over several weekends.  Lots of options and choices.  I think you will find the the guys on NCKA are a valuable source of information.    Look forward to meeting you otw.

Like Dale said, what's your weight, height and what type of fishing? If u watch diligently, good deals for used yaks come up.  You can set up your account so that any time someone posts to the classified, you get an email notice. I have bought 7 used yaks from Ncka at great 'bro only' prices, amongst other things. Good luck

Peace & blessings!

WTTMadness!!  a 10ft yak is way too small for the salt. = 13ft minimum (imho)
buying used from a local kayak shop that supports NCKA is a good way to save some dollars.

Welcome!!

If you are interested in Santa Cruz Kayaks you should PM Baitman (Jim Martin) and see when and where you can demo one...the Raptor is a great boat and I really enjoyed paddling and diving off it.

There are also some good reviews of all kinds of kayaks in this section here:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=21.0

Try before you buy is always good advice with any kayak...there are a bunch of great boats out there, but each paddler/angler/diver is different so finding the one that is right for YOU is important.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing you OTW!

Sincerely,

Jim
