I guess it depends... trolling, I prefer two poles and a hands off approach.  Two poles, because two is more than one... and hands off because I can't get trigger happy an set the hook on every little bump.  I have found that trout fishing, I hook more fish... and more importantly I land more fish as well.

I'm definitely a hands-on angler.  I guess it comes from my background in "run-n-gun" bass fishing, but I hold my rod as much as possible.  Since I rarely fish cut or live bait, I guess I don't have much of an option.  Even if I'm trolling, I keep my rod wedged under my leg so I can know what my lure is doing.

It's funny, but I can't think of any kind of fishing, other than trolling where I have used two rods.  As far as bass fishing goes, people use poll holders?

When it comes to trout, I'm definitely a fan of using two rods at once.  My typical setup from the kayak is a jig on one rod (or some sort of artificial) and a second rod that is typically soaking bait vertically.  If the bite is really going off, then I'll stow the bait rod and only fish the lure rod.  But on typical days, I love having the option of showing the fish two different things at once (and being able to fish two different depths at the same time).  Plus, I always like to have at least something in the water when I'm tying up another rod with something else.

When it comes to trolling, I like to have one rod in the holder and another rod in my hands.  The rod in the holder will be trolling something slow n steady, like a worm+dodger, while the rod in my hands will have either a jig or some sort of plug to which I can give additional action.  Trolling is probably my least favorite way to fish, but I'm becoming a fan of this 2-rod method on Almanor when I can't find the fish.

As usual, the when and where has a lot to do with it.  I used to hate trolling, but now I love it.  Almanor intrigues me, I can't imagine jigging vertically for trout in say, Lake Sonoma, and being successful.  The fish don't seem to group up (they do very occasionally) in a way that would make it productive.  Of course, we are talking strictly Rainbows vs. mostly Browns... regardless, I have got to get up there sometime.

Very true.  I guess I don't really target rainbows from my kayak specifically, and it shows with the fish that I catch: rainbows are a relatively uncommon catch when jigging.  I have had a few times where the powerboat trollers were nailing fish at 30 feet down in 60 feet of water, in a very large area.  I don't have a downrigger so trolling at 30 feet is a PITA for me.  To remedy this, I've had success just pulling out 30 feet of line on the jig rod and just drifting and jigging.  As long as the wind is calm, the drift alone will give you a very slow "troll" and you can actually do really darn well.  Again, this is Almanor-centric, but I would think it could apply to other lakes with piscivorous trout.

Back to Weimarian's thing on holding the rod though: yeah, I definitely prefer holding it in my hands over anything else.

I still fish with dead/ fresh/ live bait allot.  I find my 2 rod stamp almost worthless, If it's slow I put out 2 rods and it's still slow, zero is zero even if it's on 2 rods.  Of course then there's the opposite, I put 2 rods out and the action is fairly fast and shit just gets confusing and/or tangled up.

I caught the sturgeon in my avatar on the first rod I put out while getting the second rod baited up, now that was a good day,

At any rate even on a slow boring bait fishing day I seldom use 2 rods.

Trolling? what's that?  :smt002

Fishing for WSB I ususually have 2-3 rods out  :smt003  Had a double WSB hookup once on my X-Factor, when both rods were crossed over each other and tucked under my legs.  Thankfully one on the right went right, and the one on the left went left!  :smt044  But I only got the one on the right  :smt005

I love bait fishing. Sturgeon, stripers, cats, love it. I always double my odds and go two. I think the hang-up when using holders is when you don't have the rods in your hands, you tend to not pay attention to your rod-tips. If you're going to use rod holders, your cannot take your eyes off your rods. If you aren't going to use holders and keep the rod in your hands, then you don't have to intensely watch your tips because you'll feel it. So try and fight the urge to look at the birds and trees and stuff, and stay focused!

Watching your rod(s) while sturgeon fishing is an all consuming experience, it's a zen thing, nothing exists except the tip of the rod,

It's almost impossible to describe a sturgeon bite, it's just when your rod tip does something it shouldn't then BAM!!!!

Sorry for the jack, I gotta get out there.

I always troll two rods, always. I seem to catch fish from what I've been told too. Today I was bass fishing with two. Wacky senko on one and a jig on the other. Cast out Senko and as it falls toss out jig. Keep eye on Senko line. If it moves set hook. You can always feel the jig hit. Success today was one 18.25 SMB, one 15.25 SMB, and one lost fish that seemed even bigger than the 18". Two rods seem to work for me no matter what I am fishing for.

If you're one of those yak anglers that like fishing live bait fishing for bass then it exist.... at Clear Lake.  If you don't catch fish with two rods your best bet is to try a different spot.  Heck if that doesn't work, then start calling the fish or even yell at the fish to try out your house special.   :smt044
