I'm sure he was aware of the air temp. And dressed well for the occasion. As for the lake freezing hard that fast Don't think so unless he is in Alaska or upper midwest on a very small lake. If that happened where he ran into thick ice that would be a different story and bad result.

Great pic!  To be in tune with the conditions and the locale as well as potential changes that could occur - these are all required in order to do that and not be doing something risky.  That's one of the best things about our sport:  the ability to learn how to maximize the odds and your own control through knowledge, planning, gear and fitness.  Beautiful.
