As many of you know, part of what I do through FreshKATS is provide event insurance for the tournaments, and I do this by having a $15 dues fee for club members.  I have to pay for the event insurance on April 1 this year and my cost went up a bit, so I am asking folks that think they will be making it to the FreshKATS events this year to register for the club when they are able.  I will of course have the roster at all the events to keep track of who has paid the $15 dues for 2013, but I thought it might be nice to have a list here so you can check for yourself as well :)

The current roster is:

1 - Weimarian - Ron
2 - DrHabanero - Jim
3 - Free8135  -Igor
4 - FolsomFishing - Scott
5 - Sonoramike - Mike
6 - Naoaki
7 - Ash
8 - PakehaCherie - Cherie
9 - Avery Sintes
10 - ScottV
11 - Racin Rob
12 - FishFarmer- Ben
13 - Daleshark- Tim
14 - VWool - Victor
15 - Ryan (Team Chancho)
16 - Len Meier
17 - Mary Meier

43 members to go. :)

Thanks guys, your support keeps this tournament series going!

I need 60 club members to break even without using tournament fee's (which I would rather use for permits and prizes).

For those that want to pay the dues before getting to the events, there are 2 ways you can do that.

mail your info and a check to:

Jim Meier
2764 Bradshaw Road
Sacramento, CA 95827

or
paypal to:  sacjrm@gmail.com

please include your screen name, address with zip code and phone number

Thanks again!!

Jim

I still don't get it. Sorry if this sounds stupid. Do I have to pay $15 to join FreshKATS if I want to enter the Berryessa Salmon Slam tourney?

Yes... Like an umbrella in the rain... It covers all the events... Year long membership... Soon all will need insurance to do a fishing event anywhere. That's why Jim put it together. Hope this helps...  :smt006

at last years Berryessa Slam they said that they picked up the cost of the insurance and that this year it would be included with freshkat series.
$15.00 for all year and includes all the freshkats events.

I think the main thing that it covers are the event venues from trying to shut us down for lack of insurance.

I am not sure but I don't think this includes any of the Mendocino Lake or Lake Solano events that the other guys are putting together

Yep, Ron and Luis have it correct.  The only way to have events at the government run lakes is to have liability insurance. The events run on Mendocino etc are covered by the sponsoring shop insurance.  Saltwater events are too expensive to insure and do not normally require it anyway...

I am doing this because i like to kayak fish and people seem to like the events.  I dont make money on this and my final unrecovered  out of pocket expense was a bit over $200 by the time the series was over last year.

This year I have to tap savings again for permits, insurance and non sponsored prizes.   I hope to break even this year and keep my wife happy...

I don't want to under value all the hard work you guys put into events, but I want to share some concerns. Jim if you are saying we need to have insurance for gov't lakes does this mean you are being issued a special use permit by the gov't for say Berryessa? And does this also mean we need to also get a state permit for tournaments? I think we should be careful how we define our get togethers because there may be a lot of costs that come in you are not aware of. Generally speaking you need a special use permit for events having more than 25 people on federal lands and waters. And if it requires analysis there may be some cost recovery on the government side, in our case it could be the impact of aquatic invasive species as an example. This interest goes up if you are perceived to be charging for entry into events which kinda sounds like we doing. I thought the idea of having insurance was really to cover any of us in a real case emergency, rescue, etc. not just from a liability standpoint to hold an event. I think we have been under the radar with our events (speaking to inland waters here) keeping them more as friendly get togethers rather than defined paid participant events may help keep it that way.   .02

FYI for ocean events
Section 230, Title 14, of the California Code of Regulations (CCR) contains the regulations governing game fish contests. Section 2003 of the Fish and Game Code authorizes the Department to issue a permit to any person authorizing that person to offer prizes or other inducements in fishing contests, tournaments or derbies for the taking of game fish. There are two exceptions: Permits are not required for (1) frog-jumping contests or (2) fishing contests conducted in waters of the Pacific Ocean. Game fish include the following species or species groups: white sturgeon; American shad; salmon and trout--all species; goldfish; common carp; hardhead; Sacramento pike minnow; western sucker; catfish and bullheads--all species; striped bass; white bass; black bass and sunfish--all species; tilapia--all species; sargo; bairdiella; and orangemouth corvina.

Diroblo  et all---

I have acquired  special use permits from the Bureau of Reclamation for Beryessa as well as a special use permit from the Army Corps for the event at Black Butte and am working on others for the events at New Melones and Bullards Bar.  I pay for those with event and FreshKAtS $$, what is left over I use for prizes and things like the port-a-potty for the Port of Sacramento event.  I have also applied and paid for the DFG permits for all 6 events.  I was lucky that the permits were not too expensive this year, but that took a lot of time on the phone explaining the events and the nature of the group.  So far I have shelled out $240 in permit fee's this year and am still working on the permits for New Melones, and Bullards Bar.

The FreshKATS events are not flying under the radar, everything is by the book.

As far as "the idea of having insurance was really to cover any of us in a real case emergency, rescue, etc. not just from a liability standpoint to hold an event"  yes, that is just as much of a concern, but we simply could not have most of these events without the permitting and licensing...

So when you pay for your FeshKATS membership, you get permits, DFG licensing, liability insurance for screw-ups and personal injury and rescue insurance at all events I am hosting or otherwise covering for the calendar year of your membership.

Thanks For clarifying Jim! Sounds like you need to do more cost recovery!  I was worried we might hit the wall at some point, but obviously you are following through, so thanks again for all the hard work. Is $15 enough?

Hi Jim,
Question for you...I know it's $15 a year for membership into FreshKATS. but is there an additonal charge/fee to enter each event/tourney?

Diroblo -- yes, $15 is enough, but that is why the answer to Cheries question is, $10 per event entry fee.  Like I said, I don't make any money doing this, I do it because I like to and you all like the events  :)  besides, I haven't had a job for almost 3 years and take care of my 6 month old baby full time, so I need something to distract me...  ;)

If Jim had not intervened last year to help Ricci at the last minute, the Salmon Slam last year would not have taken place, for lack of the $1M liability insurance coverage.

I am happy that you were able to work things out with the camping situation, if there was no camping I think we would have lost half of the participants.

Good Job Bro.
