As I recall from River Monsters the Aripaima are considered sacred in the wild. They do farm them as a food fish though.
Such a neat fish, totally prehistoric.

Yeah... the are supposed to be delicious.  But, they are also endangered.  There was an minor uproar a few years ago about this.  Kinda funny as three tv shows sorta came together with episodes on the fish at nearly the same time.  First Jeremy Wade went down there and caught one, of course singing the fish's praises the whole time.  Then within a month both Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern had shows down there where they went out with locals, netted, killed, and ate Arapaima.  I'm no PETA nut, but even I was pretty offended.

The river monsters episode visited an aripaima farm where all the fish were in the 20lb class. Wade got smacked by one so that he coudl attest to their battering ram heads being able to knock a man out. Then they netted one from the pen and ate it. I remember the distinction between farmed and wild aripaima being pretty important.

I remember him getting a rib cracked.  Yeah... he definitely released his wild caught arapaima.  Wade let just about everything go on his show.  There was a second arapaima episode where they traveled way way way into the bush to fish this one lagoon that had a arapaima in it that they took samples from that turned out to be genetically unique from known arapaima's.
