I guess my boat has been sunk, unless I head south and don't come back, I'll be there. Guess the WAF points are a bit low, I think she even put a jinx on me, for my hand has swelled up like a pumbkin overnight :karate

Who Knows, still might rush the gates anyway......Danglin

Great tournament Jim!  Here's my story from it:

The Steve Moyer Fishing Tournament at La Jolla Cove was my first fishing tournament after starting yak fishing in January.  I dropped my week-long, scent-marinated sardine jellytail on a 1.5 oz head in after passing the marine preserve buoy and paddled out 2.5 miles to where all the other tournament yakers were stationed to catch yellow tail.  Before I got all the way out I caught something BIG!   It pulled my yak so hard that visions of JAWS flashed through my memory.  I threw one leg over the opposite side of my yak, leaned that direction, and held onto my reel trying to increase the drag by holding the line down on the rod and putting my thumb onto the reel.  The line kept going out while I was passing by other boats.  I was no longer trolling, but being trolled.
Other fishing lines and hooks started appearing on my line.  What a way for a newbie to make friends!  I finally got a reprieve and reeled in fast and unfastened my dagger leg knife in case I had to cut the line.  I quickly tossed someone else’s hook away from me and had to sorrowfully cut some poor fishing friend’s line.  Then I started getting pulled harder than ever.  As I was pulled passed other yakers I heard, “Did you catch something big?”  I also realized that my reel was running out of line.
I’m a newbie!  What’s going to happen when my line runs out?  I watched my reel unwind to the screw holding the line and rode my yak trying to keep it straight on with the big fish.  Suddenly, the tension eased.  I reeled in relieved that whatever that thing was, it was GONE, and I still had a lot of line to fish the rest of the tournament!
Then the other yakers said, “You got spooled by a Mako shark!”
Well, that sure puts a new spin on my occasionally girly breaks in the water!
I didn’t catch anything else during the tournament except bottom, but I sure had some fun and excitement!

Great Event and a bunch of world class anglers!

Got a late start as to get the go ahead, combo'd a weekend getaway w/ the wife and tourney on the side.

BTW, the La Jolla Bed & Breakfast is top notch and very romantic, hence the late start.

Alot of the kayaks were already in the water by the time I arrived (sorry to miss ya danglin) and it was an easy launch right off the beach.

Made it the bait boat and was given 2 red nosed half dead sardines for payment for being late. Headed over to the Pier and made 4 macs in no time. Stuck one on a 1oz slider for my low and fly lined the other.

My first hit came soon after I made bait, close to the pier. Saw that my fly line was straight down and something tuggin at it. As soon as I got it out of the holder and swung - missed it! Brought up a mack w/ a crushed head.

So that's what the dreaded crushed head looked like. Like you took the bait and squeezed just the head w/ thumb and forefinger. The classic yt bite - shoulda let it run, rookie mistake.

Next bite, the line was ripping on my avet. I let it run for 5 seconds before putting the hammer down on my avet. Not long enough = popped the bait off.

and that was it.

Lost my other baits to kelp when I went over to where everyone else was.

I did see 3 'fire crackers' caught in my general area, so the fish were around.

I also saved some poor sap whne I noticed his bow high in the air and his back end sinking. Had to flag a PB and then yell to the guy to yell to the PB to ask for help. He wasn't a fisherman, but some newb who had gotten a Hobie Sport and forgot to put the drain plug in.

Gettin late, I'll finish up later...the BBQ

Just got back @ 4:00am Monday, INCREDIBLE TURNOUT, Had to be a world record for participants for a kayak fishing event, I think it was somewhere close to 180 yaks, I also feel that not more than a dozen fish where caught," little slow" they said. That left a clueless yaker like myself skunked!!! Except for the bait and one small Barracuda.

BarbiQ very festive, got to give it to Jim's daughter on working the Kayak for Chef, She did a great job barking them in to buy tickets. Interesting Kayak they Donated, a Masser or something, looked cool, I think per the rep, that Chuck is getting one for us to Demo soon.

Incredible amount of prizes, so much so that Jim just started throwing them out to the crowd instead of calling numbers, and for the first time, I was skunked on a raffle :smt010

Really cool people, Busted out of the house 12:30 Friday, made Avanida de la playa, La Jolla @ 9:00pm. Parked right @ the beach on the road, met 2 so cal yakers from " Saltwaterbastards.com ". Found out it was cool to " Bum It " there and crashed. 3:00 They started arriving, and by 5;00, it was fishing kayak mecca.

I was headed home post the BQ, could not take the fact I did not score a yellow tail, U-turn, and tried the next morning,(listening to Denise Spike on the radio while I rigged up, crazy kayak vibes down there!)  Got close, with a few hits, then lost my only sabuki :smt013

Loaded up, bought two more @ the nearest location(Wallmart 6 miles out 52 east, 1st exit past the 805/8, turn right) for the evening bite, no love, 8hr drive home to face the music....Good time...... :smt004

Lots of eye candy :smt007 the best was a very pretty taned blond in a black bikini, carring a prowler down the street by herself, sorry, no pictures....would ruin what ever is left of my WAF account...Danglin

Sorry I missed you NorCals in the crowd. Yellowtail aren't automatic, but it was a sure thing someone would land a fatty. I wish you'd have been rewarded for your effort in making it down here.

The winner was Patrick Moench, who brought in a 29-lb yellow. Nice fish.

Bradley Messmer took 2nd with a 25 lb'er. They tailed off from there.

I launched at the gun, sprinted to the pier, jigged up two greenbacks, and then rushed off west to make my spot by grey light. Crossed the canyon and came into 120 ft when the big greenie made a few twitches, just like it would if a calico had it. Held the reel and waited, then it took off. 5 minutes later I had a 13 lb yellow, past rat status but not nearly enough meat to place.

At 182 kayak anglers, this year's Moyer Memorial is right up there in terms of the largest attendence ever. It was definitely the biggest single division open ocean charity kayak fishing tournament ever contested on the Pacific.  :smt001 La Jolla Kayak Fishing raised over $9000 for the American Cancer Society, and over $1600 for Chef Stefano. Jim, his family, Matt Moyer, the sponsors, and all those who attended should be proud of that effort.

Paul

BBQ continued...

Danglin, I missed you at the Barbie - was looking for your Sac shirt and thought that you musta went straight home. If I knew you were around, could made plans to fish the next day...

Well the BBQ was awesome. Thanks to Jim, his family and all the sponsors that made it an awesome event. There were really a ton of prizes that I thought everyone would get something.

The food was first rate and filling. Gumbo, chicken skewers and beef fajitas that were all gourmet and cooked by a first rate caterer.

You could tell that this was a well established event w/ the excellent logistics. You guys should come down next time and see what the largest kayak tourney is all about.

BTW, the T-shirt is great, and worth the entry alone! It was nice to see all the previous year t-shirts mark the events w/ different gamefish on the back.

My wife was so pleased w/ the whole event, that she wants to enter next year - that's how good it was.

The next day, headed to the pier and made tons of bait. Sardines, smelts and macs were just all hanging by the pier in huge schools.

The annual 'swimmers' race was going on and rather cut thru it. I just headed out for deeper water. Marked some fish but nothing big enough to bother my 2 huge macs I pinned on.

Hey, it was all worth it just to feel the salt on my skin. Will get back to the ocean some day.

One monster hit way out there with the PBs and a scary follow by a huge Baracuda. Anyway, it's only a 8 hr drive, so " I'll BE BACK..."....Danglin

Thanks to both of you for making the long haul to support this event, and representing the NorCal's.  Wish I could of spent more time with you, but I had my hands a bit full.
