I hope I got that busted rod laying around. With the AI would it be ill advised to tie it off to the hull? I can't see him flipping the yak (with amas). I have some alum rod that would make a nice slip tip add some vinyl coated cable....and a way to tie it off.

Once the harpoon is secured, I am going to break off the main line.

In the meantime, are you going to hold the main rod in one hand and the poon rod in another while the beast goes on it's blistering-because-I've-just-been-stabbed-run?

Why not just use a big swivel on your main line and clip off the poon line to it?  Then you only have one rod to deal with and you still get to throw the poon, which is the really fun manly part anyway!   :smt002

I have my rod in a rod holder with the drag backed off and the clicker on. I do this landing most big fish. Then I leader them close and I have 2 hands to throw the harpoon. When he takes off, I throw the drag into full which I have button all the way down and it pops the 3' - 30# leader. I guess I could tie the 2 lines together but I hate spectra next to mono.

With the full AI package it would probably be OK to tie to the Aka bar with a rope. I wouldn't go shorter than 30' thoough. Check out the you tube videos after the poon shots. They go down first then swing out laterally at high velocity.

I made an improvement to my slip tip based on a commercial design by adding a kick plate to the bevel edge. This helps to prevent the tip from back tracking and improves tip rotation.

Like Sean, decided to make a kage with the leftover parts. I haven't had much luck with head bonkers with big halis. Total cost was less than $15. Wanted to have something that I could stow in the Hobie center hatch so came up with a telescoping design. It is 23" collapsed and 41" extended. It isn't strong enough to lift the fish but should be fine as a skull penetration weapon. I haven't completed the beautification part. more pics when done. Nice to have around to repel aggressive furbags too.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

That is a really cool innovation Scott!
Very clean design, it looks like you would find it in a specialty tackle shop!
