I'm new to the forum. We run a Four Wheel Camper on a Tundra. The nice thing about the FWC is it can handle the torque of off-roading. We use this set-up to boondock camp away from the crowds, but occasionally do stay in campgrounds. We frequently visit the Sierras, especially enjoying the eastern Sierras. Anyone else using light weight campers to get to those not so easily accessed fishing spots?

Here's a picture of my pop-up :smt044! the further off the grid I go, the less I bring.

Seriously thou, I am looking to purchase one of those mini military trailers, fab up a pop-up/slide out and pull it behind the jeep; but those damn trailers are a little too pricey right now.... but one day....

We have always been tent campers....but I still seem to bring a ton of stuff with us! Those pop-ups look very cool! How bear-proof are they?

Alfonso has a Viking pop-up...I was asking him all about it at Crab Fest. It's compact and can be towed really easily. With all that wind, I don't know how the tent campers managed! That kind of PUP seemed like it worked well (if you don't have an RV).

We are tent camping at Tahoe in September (I better watch out for those bears, LOL).

Nothing to worry about if you properly store your food.

4x4yak (Matt) just built an oversized tent trailer, beefed the axle and stuck 31" tires on it to tow behind his jeep on the trail. I don't know if its Rubicon ready, but he is planning to take it into hell hole res this summer, its pretty bad ass. Sent him a pm

G-Whiz, that looks like a nice spot.
Cherie, the canvas part of our camper is pretty high, so definately more bear proof than a tent, but since bears can get into cars and cabins, I'm not sure anything is truly bear proof. We have been within 100 feet of a grizzly with no problem. Like dilbeck said, food storage is important. Keep a clean camp - no garbage, toothpaste, or anything scented outside. In Tahoe they have bear boxes at the camps. Rangers will cite you if you don't use it.

Trying to load a shot of our rig. This is my first photo post so hopefully it works. If so, this was taken at Burnside Lake. I have done ok shore fishing here but look forward to getting the kayak on it.

Mosquitos are really terrible there at the beginning of the season too.
Last year or the year before some guy drove a 25 to 28' older class A motorhome in there and parked across the dirt launch ramp and stayed there almost all summer.  He barely left enough room to back down to launch.  I remember one time I was loading up to leave and I heard him playing banjo music from inside the motorhome, I felt a lot better knowing I had a snub nosed .38 on me!
Oh, and BTW, fishing is terrible there with the shallow water and weeds, don't waste your time!  Besides that, it takes 30 minutes to drive the 5 miles of dirt road to get there.
Anyway, here is mine, it is a 98 Coleman Santee, this was at Spicer Reservoir last summer:

So I have a question....how exactly do you figure out what you can and can't tow?
I ask, because I am thinking more and more about the idea of a PUP. My hubby was looking into converting a used cargo trailer, but after seeing Weimarian's lovely set-up, it got my mind spinning.....

Jim, how do you like your Coleman? You mentioned that it didn't go well with the winds at Bodega...how did you manage? Any damage?

So I have a Kia Sorento (V6, 276 hp) which has a GVWR of 5203, yet the manual says the max tow weight is 3500. How much do those PUP's weigh?
