Mike, read Scwawfish's article on Mendo,in the Home section.Do'nt use bluegill,I believe fish and game frowns on that!Large Shad are the bomb if you can catch them at one of the docks.Main tip is Get there early!Sun up to 9am is golden .The  South launch has been most productive.Troll slow and look for boils.

Indeed, it is illegal to use live bluegill as bait except in some parts of imperial county (southeast corner) of california.

Get a bait net and scoop some shad at the South Boat Ramp. thats the Best bet....  I use an egg sinker with a good sized leader and lip hook the shad.

The fun action is using a Zara Spook  (blue/silver/white)  toss it into the boils...  Also another hit is the zoom.  I rig mine texas style and cast them into the boils and after the boil is done.  I let it drop to the bottom and work it upwards....

Good Luck Its hotter than HELL in Ukiah.. Im headin to the coast for some ling action.

Was there last week on Friday and hooked three nice stippers of 8+ pounds.  Bent the hooks out on my TD pencil and lost the biggest one (upgrade hooks on the smaller baits).  Definitaly an early thing, position yourself where the boils have been most common early and wait.  You have to battle the boats that like to run over the boils if they are too far from where you are sitting, but patience was key as I had four nice size boils erupt right around my yak.  Straight across from the main ramp was the area i did best in.  I will be headed up again this coming Thursday, later.....
