Your idea is sound, yet I would suggest designing in some adjustability. I'm 6' and have a Revo 13. Throughout a day of fishing, I find the need to change my seat angle. I would build an adjustable clamp for the tube behind you.

Avoid drilling holes till you have pounded thru a few days on the water. Mechanical advantage on stress points could cause failure over time, so design with that in mind.

Get the Surf to Summit GTS Expedition. Your mod won't be nearly as comfortable. Believe me, it is the best $200 investment you will ever make. I am 5'10" and use the GTS Pro and love it. Don't drill into the aka or cross bars, it voids the warranty. You will need a pair SS carabiners to attach the front straps.

i have the gts elite with the pack. I totally agree on money well spent. I use the pack for snacks and large tackle (leader, scent, etc). That way all my terminal tackle goes in a single hobie bucket.

Cleverly designed to use existing seat attachment points. Bulk of the work will be done by the front straps.

I'm not as happy with the Hobie seat in my AI either, but have never really complained about it on the Outback before.  However on my OB, my seat rests just a little bit against my crate, and I think thats possibly why i'm more comfortable.  I may try the GTS seat, but it's looking a bit expensive.  Was thinking of trying this mod though:

Yes same principle as Rudyaks. I'm just cleaning up his design. Drawing up in CAD tonight (with bomber seat holes) and will  laser cut cut tomorrow in 3 MM Plyboo, 3 MM thick acrylic and .080 inch thick aluminum. Testing will prove which material will be the best combo of lightness and rigidity.

Yours will be MUCH cooler by FAR!  :smt002  I'm not so good with metal... So I have to go the PVC route most of the time  :smt044

seriously, it's looking good, should work if stiff enough.

The reason high back seats aren't higher is to accommodate a high back PFD and to not restrict paddling.
