Yeah, I have had some attacks of it over the years.  If I cause my blood sugar to plunge and rise by dieting then overeating it will hit.  I have tried trader joe's pure cherry juice when I feel a twinge of it coming on.  The science on this is not 100%, but it seems to have helped me in the past.  I also have colchicine and indomethacine both are prescription meds.  The indo (not sure of the spelling) knocks the symptoms very quickly.  It is rough on the stomach though.  The colchicine must be taken for about 90 days long with a careful diet.  It changes your blood chemistry so that your uric acid levels get real low, therefore no gout.  First time it happened I accused my wife of breaking my big toe while I was sleeping!

A buddy of mine has it off and on, last time he had an attack was on a cruise ship, he ate too much shellfish and had too many beers.  He said it was so painful he could not walk, put a sock or shoe on or even touch his foot.  He has been able to control it without meds by not eating shellfish and laying off the beer.

I had my first attack about the time that I was contemplating getting a Hobbie.  I thought it would be my luck to buy a Hobbie and then have ongoing gout problems.  Gout initially involves the large joint of the big toe 50% of the time, so you really don't want this if you are trying to pedal a kayak--the pain can be excruciating, and the joint can be so sensitive that you can't even let your sheet touch it.

I have had good a good response to indomethacine.  I can irritate some people's stomach, but he SR (sustained release) form seems to get around this problem for most people.

I got this as well but was told not to take it until the gout flare is completely over with. I was told it COULD  make things worse if I took it during a flare up.

About 8 years ago I had it on my left big toe. Then, just about a month ago, I had it on my right ankle and left knee at the same time and was confined on a wheel chair for almost a month. Just as I was feeling better and ready to take the allopurinol, the flare up returned a few days ago on my right ankle and then my left ankle the day after. The chemo treatments + blood thinner meds have triggered it. SUCKS big time....

colchicine - I tried this but I had severe diarrhea - no more of that in the future  :smt011

I have the black cherry pills from GNC but have not used them yet but I hear it works. Thanks for the feed back fellas.

GOUT = WORSE PAIN EVER :smt011

Damn joel, that sucks, mine is still located in the left and right big toes, mostly the left, and when i do get a flare up it is the most intense pain and walking is out of the question for at least a week, i try to control it through diet and moderation of yeast based libations :smt003, but damn i love my beer and offal, cameron

I used to be the president of the "gout club" at church. But I resigned when it never came back.

Eliminating animal protein except out of the ocean works for me.  Cow? or Beer?  Easy choice.

Mooch,
I turned to juicing fresh vegetables and fruit juices since Feb 2012 and it fixed my gout problem for good.
The following combinations in order of priority is what Becky and myself is taking each day (at least 16 oz of any combination):
Formulation
61      Carrot 10 oz    Spinach 6 oz
2        Carrot   7         Celery   4       Parsley      3      Spinach  3
30      Carrot  10        Beet      3       Cucumber  3
Reference: Fresh Vegetables and Fruit Juices by NW Walker. pg 80
I'll see if I can get you a copy.
Danny
