I so would have trown a line in the water, after turning off the camera! I know it is illegal, and there is no chance of landing it, but to be able to say that I hooked, and fought a GWS, would be pretty cool.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

You're right, that's exactly what the shark was thinking...

On a serious note... from the relative safety of a powerboat, that would be really fricken cool to see.  I totally would have touched the dorsal fin on the way by.
Never trust a man that doesnt like to fish...

We saw a GSW while fishing for Humboldt Squid on the New Sea Angler out of Bodega Bay a few years back. Rick was lopping some squid heads and tossing them back in for a bit after the first 50 or so were brought aboard. About an hour later the school of squid was from 250 to the surface, up from 900.  We probably had 200 on board. I was bringing another one up and that shark caught my eye from off to my left. We checked it out for a few seconds as it went under the boat and just disappeared. Really cool experience. A couple weeks later someone hooked a GWS while out there with the same outfit fishing for squid. I guess they were using hooks on their war clubs...
