Have you thought about buying a set of walkie talkies?  They work pretty good, $20 - 40$. My VHF has an FRS band and works well with most walkie talkies.

Yeah the ones you get at sporting good stores are great. We used them for skiing and around the campground....I sometimes get sidetracked at a few sites :smt044

Wal Mart has one for about $46 for a local score on a radio.

For the GF on the shore, yeah i'd go with a Cobra or a Uniden, really cheap in most places!  I've seen Uniden 2-Packs of VHF's for 50$.  Not that i'd trust it on the ocean, but good for a backup or shore unit  :smt002

The thing with a VHF is that they are not supposed to be used for ongoing conversations, no offense meant, so if it is just to saty in touch with updates as to locations and return times etc, then I would say it's just fine. On the other hand the FRS channels have little to no restrictions. My VHF does FRS but I'm not sure if they all do.

I doubt anyone would hassle you, but it is illegal to use a VHF on land.
