Jim and I got out there early this morning.  The surf was the worst I have seen it since Jim and I have been watching it.  Watched for about an hour and then decided there were small windows and we were going to give it a try.   Lesson learned from today when people say " I have to see this" before you you try something, you might want to rethink your plan.  We headed out and got to the last wave in the pictures and we were trying to time it, but the window was to short.  So we gave it one hard try and got rolled pretty good.  It is amazing how small the kayaks are when you are in a bad spot.  I know we could have made it yesterday comparing the surf, but today was not a good day to try.  Overall great day and a fun attempt, after that first try we had people cheering for us to try again, but I think they were doing it for entertainment, and not looking out for our best interests

HOLY COW  :smt118

Well, at least you guys gave it a shot. Besides, you'll never know your kayaks capabilities if you don't try.

Cheers to you both  :beer2

The break reminds me of Linda Mar - you'd have to paddle really fast just to clear 3 to 4 big breakers to get into the clear :smt045

Jeez...What a pansy!   HA...Just kidding bro.  I am impressed that you made the attempt.  I was wishing you well this morning as I drove by the hotel.  It didn't look too bad there, but your pictures proved that you've got some big cajones.  Hopefully I'll get a chance to fish with you again before you leave!

C'mon, it doesn't look that big in those photos...J/K.  I echo what Mooch said. Plus, you guys are smiling pretty big in that pic so you must have at least gotten that "I'm so glad I survived" post adrenaline euphoria, and that's something  :smt003.
Nice pics, except for the big surf it looks like the day was beautiful.

That launch looks suicidal!!!  I wish I were there… watching from the shore with a cup of hot chocolate and a video camera…  :)

From the pictures, it does not look possible to launch successfully.  At Linda Mar, there are big rollers, but they don’t break as far out as it appears in the pics.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

surfpulse says:

Mixed swell 2 ft @ 13-15 secs coming from the north and south

so two small swells.

hard to time it.

good try!

Lost tackle box and dip net:  $20
Bottle of Advil for my tweaked back:  $5
Getting to frolic in the waves with Ed at sunrise:  Priceless

HA HA!

We thought we had it until the 4 footer broke right in front of us.....then it was roll city.  In case anyone was wondering, Ed's new Cobra Maurader is a much better surf boat than the Tarpon 140.

You really need a period of at least 30 seconds between breakers....we ran into a set about 5 sec apart, which spelled doom for our trip.

Nice try guys! To bad you lost some gear but it is a great experience to batton down the hatches and play in the surf to get a feel for your limits. Well only if you have a buddy as well.

So did you guys really haul your gear up that big hill?

Great (if insane) try, guys.  That outside break looks like a wall to me.  Glad you shared the adventure and are still smiling.

Darn forecast is that it is going to get worse through the weekend.........darn

The 2nd and 3rd picts are scary.  Like a wall of doom.

I think the -1.2 tide at 7:30 AM really made the launch even worse.  I suspect a high(er) tide might have eliminated those breakers so far offshore.

You guys get honors for bravery and courage though.

There was one gentleman and his wife that walked up the hill with a couple of surf rods at about 0630. He mumbled, "NO FISH" and he loaded his gear......

Way to take a shot guys!

I've studied those sets dozens of times, 'cuz I *really* would like to launch there for salmon.  Of those, I've only felt maybe twice that I had a reasonable chance of making it out.

Glad you had fun and nothing important was lost or broken.

WOW, those are some big waves.  What makes that so diffiicult is the low tide.  Very much like Linda Mar on a bad day.  Last summer I spent 25 minutes trying to get through stuff like that.  I made it eventually after many rolls, however I spent the rest of my trip out worried about the landing.  not fun.
