Thanks for clearing that up Gordon. I was under the impression that you could always use live bait if you caught it in the same lake you where using it.

The entry form says "Heaviest Bass or Trout".  Don't know if they've changed their minds...

Mol you are the bass master but am I thinking a live bluegill could catch a whopper.

There is no doubt that at Loch Lomond the best bait would be a live bluegill.

Alas, as has been pointed out, it is a BIG no-no.

No in my younger, less respectible years, I wouldn't care (and didn't), but I am older and wiser.

I have caught lots of largemouth on live bluegill in the past.  Even when the bass were mingling with free bluegill, there is something about a hooked bluegill that drives bass mad.

Alas, it is not to be on Sunday.

Visibility is about 2 feet now.  It has improved dramatically since friday last week.

Honestly, the water clarity is just perfect for bass fishing.  Stained, but not muddy.

I've heard of 1 channel cat caught out of LL in the last 2 years.  They may be in there, but they are not common.  It would be a stupendous waste of time fishing for them in a 6 hour tournament without extensive pre-fishing and location knowledge, if even then.

An example of a typical LL bass from last year.

mol  did you get them off the reed bed just past the island?  Last season I was hitting them every cast off that bed.  Waters only 8 -10 I tossed anchor and had fun with my ultra-lite!

I didn't try that area, but it is the same structure that I fished.

The spot I fished was the first reed bed northward on the opposite side of the lake from the dock.

I'm guessing that any tules hold spawning bluegill right now.

I know that spot as well.  I posted last season about that spot.  It was the 2nd area I was thinking about but choose the ask about the one I did.  I actually landed more fish on the area I asked about, (larger fish as well) than on that reed bed across from the dock.   I imagin that any reed bed will be good now!
It figures, the bite turns on when I have a substancial home project underway :smt012 I'm replacing the skirting around my mobilhome and only have 1/4 of it completed.
Last season I was landing them on a 1/16 oz "trout trap" a tiny white tube, on my 2lb ultra-lite Loved to hear the drag sing on that tiny pole! Tehy look like these:

Yep!

If I had had my crappie rod with me I would have been using kalins triple threat jigs to select for the larger fish.

I'll hit them up again for sure.

am I not reading those regs right or do they say any dead fish except the ones listed are a no-no too?

I've heard of people using anchovys for catfish and the like, it would seem that is not allowed either?

Interesting.

That is how I read it too, but I have used mackerel for bait (dead) for catfish all the time.....

Stupid unclear regulations.

I talked to Ranger Katy Moore yesterday for the newspaper report.  She said the vis was 4 foot and improving, and surface temp 71.

She also says reports this week of  "a number" of 5-6 pound bass (all released) and she has seen numerous limits of trout this week.

Not being eligable for the contest, i will concentrate on trout.  I got the secret Mike Baxter rig out in the garage right now.  He loaned me the rig, but I had to agree to fish with a blindfold.   I'm tempted to run up there tomorow to test it out, cant wait.....but I have to prep for my trip to "big trout" country next week.
