I got jealous of the woks some guys at ncka are using to cook up their catch so I decided to tackle the wok-making project myself.  I was able to secure some plow disc from Bill/FishingForTheCure and some horseshoes from one of my customer that's into horses.  The grinding of the discs to get the rust off is still in progress but today was the first day I was able to clean them up.  Once clean I will hand them over to a buddy to plug the holes and weld the handles then time to season them just in time for the holidays....
Hope to get a couple back to you soon Bill! :smt002

I used to sell new ones to many mexicans. They loved them because they would heat up very fast. With weeds or light wood. I made one cured it with vegetable oil so it would not rust so easy. Make sure you have a good pair of welding gloves to handle it. The thin ones are best for cooking and weight. New these are not too expensive I'd get a cheep one under 20 inches in Diameter and thinest one possible. The guys in fresno get them at AG West. they also would send one UPS.

The one I picked up from Bill are 22" and 21" diameter.
Grinding the rust off and taking the pittings off is hard work but I think it will all be worth it when I fry my first fish on it.

Holy Toledo has some rusty ones that he left here at the shop. Im just not too sure about the metal being all rusty and pitted like that. A new one would be the shizzle. Ive repaired plenty of rusted out cars and that tastes not too good.

Yes a cone type of blade is much deeper. But are thicker and bigger because they are a more aggressive cut. Many books they are called conical disk blades. Thinnest ones I think are 1/4 inch and they are $$$ if you noticed. I did not sell many due to cost. Stick with a 20 inch or less. Just my opinion. For price and weight plus they can be sharp be careful not to get a nasty cut from a new blade.

I was just looking at the southwest disc website and the discs they have on the site have a bunch of pittings too.  A good grinder with 35 grit or less works really well.  I'm using a puny 41/2 so it is taking me longer.

It would be so much easier if it had been mounted on a disc. in about 15 min it would be shiny smooth. All disc come rough there is no neat to be smoothed out. I'd just throw it in a fire and burn off the paint light sanding especially the sharp edge. weld on a handle and your pretty much done except the 1 inch pilot hole. You could leave a small grease hole for a drain.

I used a 36 grit grinding disc on a 9" pnuematic grinder and it takes awhile to do. Then I sand blasted the whole thing. Then I used an acytelyne torch to burn the surfaces. Then you have to season it. For 35-50 bucks it hardly seems worthwhile. WOW the 20 in ones are really afordable. Then you have a nice base if you want to weld a perimeter vertical piece.
