Dempsey from the Rams right?

42 years ago today, back on November 8, 1970, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Detroit Lions, 19-17, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Saints won that game, thanks to an NFL record 63-yard field goal by kicker Tom Dempsey, as time expired.

The Lions took the lead at the :11 mark when Errol Mann booted home an 18-yard field goal. making it 17-16.

New Orleans then returned the ensuing kick-off to their own 28-yard line, with only :08 remaining.

The Saints, with time for only one play to get them into possible field range, were able to move the ball to their own 45-yard line, as quarterback Billy Kilmer hit Al Dodd with a 17-yard pass.

That was when Saints’ head coach J.D. Roberts sent Dempsey in to attempt a 63-yard field goal.

Now, in 1970, the goal posts in the NFL were on the goal lines instead of the end lines, so Joe Scarpati, who was holding for Dempsey, placed the ball down at the New Orleans 37-yard line with :02 left.

Dempsey made the kick, with a couple of feet to spare, breaking the old NFL record of 56 yards set in 1953 by Colts’ kicker Bert Rechichar. Dempsey still shares that record with three other kickers to this day.

Unfortunately for the Saints, it was the last game they would win that year, as they finished the season at 2-11-1, but it was a moment that fans will forever remember.



Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot and no fingers on his right hand. He wore a modified shoe with a flattened and enlarged toe surface. This generated controversy about whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage. When reporters would ask him if he thought it was unfair, he said "Unfair eh? How 'bout you try kickin' a 63 yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left an' yer wearin' a square shoe, oh, yeah and no toes either". Additionally, when an analysis of his kick was carried out by ESPN Sport Science, it was found that his modified shoe offered him no advantage - the smaller contact area could in fact have increased the margin of error. In 1977, the NFL added a rule, informally known as the "Tom Dempsey Rule," that "any shoe that is worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe."

If you're wondering where Dempsey wound up celebrating history, it was at his favorite French Quarter watering hole, Old Absinthe House.

"We were there, with all the guys, until the wee hours,'' he said. "From what I can recall, I had a great time."

ps...my Dad was at that game...left when the Lions scored cuz he figured there was no way we could come back. Driving home he about crashed his car when he heard on the radio that Dempsey had made the kick and we had won!!

Dempsey kicked the record 63 yard field goal for the Saints. The Rams never had a decent field goal kicker.

He played for several teams. The Rams were one of them during 1975-1976

Seems more like a penalty than a prize. 
I always liked that story. Half footed man holds the record is great.
Did you see recently where a high school kid in Washington kicked a 67 yd FG to tie the game and send it into OT?
