On Saturday SF locals will be hosting the second annual Golden Gate Crab Derby at Baker Beach for the season opener. On year one over a dozen crabbers set out in all manner of craft, deploying a growing fleet of hoop nets, scoring over a hundred dungees in under 2 hours. The buzz is on this year and is already bringing new competition to the derby.
Last Year:
Isao Kaji won the heaviest limit and holds the coveted derby belt.
Jared Figurski won the heaviest crab and holds the mighty Big Crab trophy.

Now its your chance to win these and other coveted prizes. Not to mention the fame...

Crab Boil, pic-nic and beverages to follow crabbers' return/ award ceremony at this scenic and popular SF beach. (Lots of non-crabbers seem to find good ways to pass the time on the beach...) A stove and cooks will be at the ready to cook up the crab to share with beach side partiers and passer-bys. Last year there was plenty to go around for all at this first and most abundant crab feast of the season. Lots of people got there crab eating frenzy on. Tourists, children, we even had the rangers grubbing down on crab...

Complimentary fisherman's breakfast and coffee: 7:30am  Official Launch: 8:30 am
Competition hours 8:30-11:30am     12:00 ceremony and lunch and festivities to last all day

Looks like the weather will cooperate and holding our breaths the swell does not come up. This is a fun event right at the gate of one of our oldest crab fisheries around.

In case you do not have gear we have lots of hoop traps for day use or even for sale. (I think we have like 40 hoops in the mix right now)  Our main goal is to get everyone out catching limits of phat crab and have a good time. There will be plenty of food and beverage, but bring your crew and something to share. It would be great to have you create this new SF tradition with us!

We'll be there, too (four of us) - we're not in the derby and launching at 8.  See you all on the water.

Just wondering where the launch is ? is it located on the sf side or marine side?

Baker Beach is on SF side west of GGB, Ft. Baker is on Marin side, east of GGB.
