There are times I wish 101 had a 35 mph speed limit , at least from 6:00 AM to 10:00 Am and the 4:00 to 8:00 PM.  I have never seen so many dumb asses with cell phones, I pods, DVD players (yes I have seen people drive and watch).  I won't get into who the worst drivers are, because all the demographics have bad drivers. I ride motorcycles and bicycles, and I stop for every sign/light.  But I see clubs of motorcyclists who think it is their right to go through redlights at speed, bicyclists who don't stop for anything to include running down pedestrains in a cross walk.
When I first moved here from Texas a woman told me I could no longer drive around with guns in my window.  Mind you, I ahve never driven with guns in my window, but I think that might return som of the civiality to driving here.  At least in Texas people pull over and let a faster moving car go by, and you wave to each other...with all five fingers not just one!  California has some of the worst drivers I have ever seen, and the most disrespectful, rude, S*B's out there.  I fear ever owning a decent car, for fear of getting plowed into (my f-150 got backed into by a neighbor, who denied it).

San Antonio, TX has police cruisers that look like regular cars, they are marked (in the same color as the police car).  The only thing these officers due is ticket aggressive drivers.  I wish the CHP would do more of that.

I've had a few close calls when I used to commute from Modesto to Dublin every day, but that's nothing compaired to what it was like when I lived in Aurora Co. and had to commute accross Denver to Wheatridge. You want to talk about crazy drivers. One guy actually stopped in the fast lane, got out and proceded to check a road map on his hood ..... IN THE FAST LANE!!!!!!!!!!.
At least it wasn't snowing.
Hate to say it, but it made me glad to be back in California where at least people know what the fast lane is supposed to be used for.

A couple weeks ago I literally got run off the freeway and onto the shoulder by a car that merged right into me while I was in the slow lane.
Even though I laid on the horn the driver never even turned his head.  I caught up to the car and looked over at it and it had to have been a 90 year old man, driving between 45 and 50mph.  He exited at the next off ramp and I watched him make another lane change, no blinker, no mirror check, no blind spot check.

Guy needs to have his license revoked.

Lots of lame ass drivers out there, and lots of obstacles to avoid on the roads, but it seems to me like SWERVING is the last thing one should do in most situations - can lead to a lot worse in most cases.  Swerving to avoid an empty cooler on the freeway could get you or someone else killed.  In most cases, slow immediately and make a controlled move to avoid.  Maybe easier said than done, but when I read about people who swerved to avoid an animal in the road and ended up wrapped around a tree I wonder if they made the right choice.

Its' not only on the freeways where the idiot drivers are.  I'm a crossing guard and I see enough of them on city streets in a school zone.  Today a double right turner (only one right turn lane) almost ran into me :smt013 as I was crossing some kids, because he didn't want to wait in line like everyone else (did make him wait for at least one car to make a legal right turn before I let him go) :smt044 :smt044

Dropping my son to school everyday has always been a frustrating drive. People are always rushing, cutting people off, and not paying attention in addition to kids crossing everywhere.

I commute from Lodi to Sacramento for office days, the other days I am driving the roads of the great state of California enforcing laws that have nothing to do with public safety unfortunately, but I feel your frustration, I see it everyday too. I learned how to cope, literally. I save my old Copenhagen cans, and when I see someone worthy of a gravel filled Copenhagen can, I share.
Hahaha.
