I've been looking for a small wood chipper, nothing industrial.  I just need to be able to chip the thin(ish) branches from the trees around my house.

I found one at Orchard Supply but I'm not sure how good it is.  I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has any experience or recommendations.  I'd prefer a gas engine (I hear they're better) but will settle for a good electric.  I don't think I'd want to pay any more than about $300.

I worked for years at a john Deere dealership if 300 is all you want to pay, Save your money. In that price range I think you might be disappointed. See if you can rent one first. I would hate to see you throw away 300. look for a used one.

You don't get much a of a wood splitter for 300.  Better off hitting a rental place, and rent it for the weekend.  I think harbor frieght or northern tool has a cheapo MIC (Made in China) manual splitter.  It will break some where into the second log once it hits its first hardwood knot.

Think he was looking for a chipper, not a splitter!  I am actually looking for a good gas powered log splitter, however.

The one I was giving away needed work, hope the NCKAer that took it has it back up and running.  How big is the thickest diameter branch you are looking at shredding?  I have a harbor freight electric one that gets the job done for branches under 1".  You can get it there for under $100 new.  It ain't gonna be fast, but it gets the job done.  Otherwise I suggest hitting up craigslist.  I picked up a couple of very nice ones for under $300.

I just happen to have one for sale....Lescha ZAK-1800, elec high quality German made item. Cuts up to 1-1/4" branches. I used it for two years in my yard. I cut most of the trees down and have not used it for a few years now. Comes with manual and spare parts kit.  $100

i had considered renting one but it's something I'll need about once a month or once every other month.  I'd rather just have something available whenever I need it.

Mike, I was looking for some info on the Lescha ZAK-1800 but didn't find much online.  Do you have pics?

I don't think I'd need it for anything over 1.5".  The electric ones seem to average about $150... I'd rather buy something of a known quality but I guess the entry point isn't too bad even if it isn't as good as I'd hope.
